Legislature has introduced Senate Bill 626 to prohibit certain dog races for the
purpose of wagering or gambling. Since the bill does not define "dog racing" or
"wagering" or "gambling" the Michigan Association for Pure Bred Dogs believes it
"opens the door" to protests from animal rights groups to challenge certain dog
show events such a "agility, fly ball, lure coursing races, sled dog racing,
coon dog races, etc. Please read the position paper in light of the following
quote from the

agility trials, coon hound water races, etc. at peril by the "vague" definitions
in the act.

The thrust of these documents is mainly related to propaganda from
anti-racing organizations with a biased animal activist view of the risks dog
are exposed to in the “racing
sports.”
perils of greyhound racing are no different from those of other forms of
competitive activities. Similar risks
are encountered in other racing events such as sled dog races, coon hound races,
lure coursing and agility trials, If
this legislation is enacted in Michigan in the current session (it was rejected
in the 1996 session) the animal rights lobby’s next effort will be to stop sled
dog racing, then coon hound racing. All
under the guise of preventing gambling and cruelty. The animal rights proponents
are already trying to stop sled dog racing events with accusations of it being
cruel to sled dogs. Next to be
prohibited will be hunting events (dogs used in large game hunting are at
considerable risk.) Then, the
legislature will be asked to outlaw hunting, one of the ultimate goals of the
animal rights agenda.
Association for Pure Bred Dogs and the Michigan Hunting Dog Federation urge you
to defeat SB 626. If the sport of dog
racing is detrimental to the public as a gambling and wagering event, then ban
other forms of gambling supported by
boat racing would be considered cruel and should be prohibited (to save the fish
who are at risk for damage from propellers.)
These bans could also be extended to training and competing with horses
in timed international Olympic events.
They too have risks of serious injury (cruelty?)

We've had a couple firsts at our house. A week ago Saturday Kaline
lifted his leg for the first time. We were very proud! On a less good note, he
took off on his very first field trip this past weekend. Everybody was out for
a walk... just like every other day.... only this time Kaline took off after
some deer. Bad dog. Craig got everybody else in the pen -- and started out in
the direction Kaline had gone.... within minutes Kaline came running back for
all he was worth. He ran right passed Craig -- and all the way up to the house.
I think if he could have turned the door knob he would have been in the
kitchen. I don't know what happened on that first experience -- but I think it
was bad.... which is good. Perhaps a deer stopped and turned to look at him...
because as we know, Kaline tries to sound tough -- but he really isn't.... or it
could be that all of a sudden he turned around and realized he was all by
himself. At any rate, he has not made any attempt to leave the comfort of the
pack on walks since then -- so we think that is a very good thing.

German Police Dogs to Wear Shoes
BERLIN
(AP) -- Police dogs in the western city of Duesseldorf will no longer
get their feet dirty when on patrol -- the entire dog unit will soon be
equipped with blue plastic fiber shoes, a police spokesman said Monday.
''All
20 of our police dogs -- German and Belgian shepherds -- are currently
being trained to walk in these shoes,'' Andre Hartwich said. ''I'm not
sure they like it, but they'll have to get used to it.''
The
unusual footwear is not a fashion statement, Hartwich said, but rather
a necessity due to the high rate of paw injuries on duty. Especially in
the city's historical old town -- famous for both its pubs and drunken
revelers -- the dogs often step into broken beer bottles.
''Even
the street-cleaning doesn't manage to remove all the glass pieces from
between the streets' cobble stones,'' Hartwich said, adding that the
dogs frequently get injured by little pieces sticking deep in their
paws.
The dogs will start wearing the shoes this spring but only
during operations that demand special foot protection. The shoes comes
in sizes small, medium and large and were ordered in blue to match the
officers uniforms, Hartwich said.
''Now we just have to teach the dogs how to tie their shoes,'' he joked.

friendly and outgoing I will try to get some photos if the weather will let
me.

The puppy instructor said "try this when he lays down....." I said, "when is that.?" She said, " he sleeps doesn't he?" I said, " I do not know." What energy he
has!
He will bark at the food bowl when done
sometimes.
I would like to take a video of Puppy Kindergarten class---- somehow
working on that, it's a two-places-at-once thing.
