Welllllll……besides the BY-PRODUCTS I reported on last week, NOW I hear about them working on a “Chicken FEATHER” diet!!!!!!
Royal Canin is also working on a product which uses CHICKEN FEATHERS as protein!!!! Royal Canin told Forbes magazine they have been developing a “Anallergenic formula” dog food for ten years using chicken feathers as the main source of protein. Keith Levy of Royal Canin told Forbes “It’s not only nutritious but can also be made very palatable to dogs. Feathers are broken down to an amino acid level and don’t have much of a taste. Then we add palatizers for taste (which could also be added to ground up boot leather for protein! :-0). In this case, we have to be very careful not to provoke an allergic reaction. That’s why it took so long to develop this particular food. We’re looking for lots of different sources of protein for our foods: hydrolyzed soy; for some of our foods in China we use worm meal. I tried some kibble made with worm meal once – it tasted very good. So our approach goes way beyond feathers.” The Feather Meal Fluff
Oui Vay! ;-/
What the hell!?? I liked Royal Canin. My dogs liked Royal Canin. Chicken feathers? What’s next? I’ll buy a bag of Pro Plan before I ever buy another bag of Royal Canin.
I’m tired of all this kibble b/s. I’m sticking with Blue Ridge Beef, Sojos and a side of Honest Kitchen.
SHAME on ROYAL CANIN!!!
That’s My Girl! :+D
GOOD choices!!!! (Happy Dance! they should make an icon for this!) 😉
Carole,
Help me out here………isn’t SoJo and Honest Kitchen sorta the same?
Which SoJo and Honest Kitchen do you use? I ordered some of the Grain free product from Sojo. It sounds yummy..but so does their original style. Bowl of that and some milk…maybe a sliced banana and I’m good to go! 🙂
DuKes’ Ma, Terri
Terri, I use H/K Thrive in a.m. and Blue Ridge Beef Puppy, Natural, or Tripe in the p.m. The evening meal is when I add the Sojos. I use the grain-free fruit & veggie mix. Once in awhile I will use one of the Sojos complete meals.
H/K & Sojos are similar but one of the things that I don’t find very appealing about H/K is that it is like feeding mush/gruel. Sojos has more substance. I’ve never been tempted to try H/K, but I could easily munch on the Sojos. 🙂 I don’t use the Sojos original because I like the versions with the other stuff added to it. Besides, if I had the original, I KNOW I’d be eating it for breakfast!
Carole,
Thanks for your reply. Gruel–yes, I agree. 🙂 I bought Sojos grain free fruit and veggies and a bag of Complete with raw beef. Both smell soooo yummy. DuKe and BJ(Dads’ Bischon) seem to like them both. I add raw beef of some sort, usually stew meat to the fruit and veggie mix, and nothing to the Complete (has beef already). Also, I use Bravo beef, chicken or turkey, just to mix it up. They also get sardines or other types of fish.
I do have some Royal Canin left, and I figure it was made before they changed the ingredients.
Last night, I purchased Dr. Becker’s book that Karen recommends. It’s the 4th addition. If anyone is interested…Amazon is out of them, I found it on Dogwise.
Just to double your comment, Vey iz mir!
Have these people been taking some kind of post-modern pills? How dumb do they think we are? (Don’t answer that)
RIGHT??????
Most people just don’t know! It is so sad what these dog food companies do to the trusting public!
I’ll bet they are still going to charge the same price for a bag of BY-PRODUCTS……AND……probably MORE for the CHICKEN FEATHERS b/c it’s a “Special Diet”!!!!!!
Karen,
Maybe it is their take on a “Prey Model” diet?
Fur, feathers, etc.
I fed my Rudi a raw diet and when he felt the need…..he chose to eat a prey model type diet. He would hunt and eat rabbits, wood chucks, birds, and was fast enough to catch chipmunks. He would eat everything and waste nothing. The idea of the fur and feathers is for fiber and bulk, I guess. I’m sure I would not feed a dog food blend that is made with feathers. ick
Terri and DuKe
Oh Terri…..I CERTAINLY hope NOT!!!!! :-/
Can you imagine? Chicken feathers for the protein instead of real meat? INCREDIBLE!
Rudi is a smart boy! Knows exactly what he needs and GETS it!!!! LOVE that but…..do NOT enjoy hearing those darn rabbits scream!!!! OUIIIIII
Thanks for the heads up on the 4th edition. I didn’t know it was out! It will definitely be interesting to see if she has changed anything. We just had our appointment with her 2 weeks ago, and although I follow her diet completely, she told me to start adding glandulars which is made up of pituitary, spleen, adrenal etc., organs that are not in the food we feed, whether raw or dehydrated. She says it provides what is missing in most diets. This is the one Becker recommends: http://www.mypetsfriend.com/pet-go-8.html
We’re on vacation in Michigan and my guys are getting the “gruel” you and Carol are talking about and they LOVE it! :+))))) Funny how all dogs have different tastes, just like people!
If you are feeding kibble, Acana is a good choice instead of the RC. Even Natural Balance (except the rabbit variety which is from China). Take about a week to wean them off the RC by mixing with the new kibble.
Karen,
I was hoping to purchase Dr. B’s 3rd edition. I am interested in the recipes. I hope she adds them in her 4th edition.
You suggested Acana. I’ve never fed this before, but I did try the Orijen Lg. Breed Puppy. Well, I didn’t…DuKe did. 🙂 He was so/so about the Orijen. It was Very fishy smelling. I did like how it came vacuum packed.
And no….I didn’t like the sound of the screaming bunnies. I like bunnies……….and….so did Rudi.
Terri
SIGH….goodbye Royal Canin
I’m at a loss trusting any pet food company. After months and many trials and frustration, you bet Rudi loves the Royal Canin with fresh ground beef heart and a bit of yogurt or cottage cheese mixed in. 😛 But Rudi likes it. 🙂 Really, it took us forever to get him interested in a kibble. I don’t want to eat chicken feathers, why would I want to feed Rudi feathers?
Wish I would have studied chemistry and nutrition!!! Produce a diet I’d be proud to feed our K-9’s and uphold to the standar of my peers.
Sorry, Julie! I forgot that you were feeding Rudi Royal Canin or I would have said something to you. Try Acana. Actually Rudi would probably like the H/K and/or Sojo’s formulas especially since Peter already prepares “treats” for him. Give me a call.
