I’m feeling a little sentimental after seeing everyone’s updates from Florida, so thought I’d share how Batman is doing.
Since moving to California, his health has improved dramatically. We’ve found a great holistic vet who has many years of experience working with military K9s, and knows GSDs well. I think this really makes a difference. Batman’s allergies have pretty much disappeared, and his ears, which used to be patchy and crusty, are back to normal.
In January, we took a 2-week course at the Michael Ellis School. It’s a great school, and ME is a great trainer.
We also started taking Precision Heeling class with Denise Fenzi, who is a personal hero of mine. I drive 2.5 hours each way to take this class. If you’ve read Denise’s blog, you probably understand why. I figured there was no way she could be that cool in person, but I was wrong. She’s even cooler, smarter and funnier than I imagined. She is a BRILLIANT trainer. I wish I could follow her around all day and just take notes. But that might be awkward.
We’re also taking a CGC class and hopefully will pass the exam in April. Fingers crossed.
Batman took a herding evaluation at the beginning of February and did wonderfully. We do need to work on his impulse control — he has a very strong prey drive for the sheep, and that drive needs to be balanced with solid obedience.
We’ve spent a lot of time in San Francisco and the Bay area going on hikes and other outdoor adventures. He finally got to experience the beach. He liked running up and down the shore, but wasn’t fond of those big noisy waves.
We try to take Batman on a hike every weekend. There are so many different spots to explore in the Bay area — it’s a hiker’s paradise. So far, we’ve hiked up Mount Tam, Lafayette Ridge, Gray Whale Cove, Sweeney Ridge, and a few others I’m forgetting. I was never much of a hiker before I got Batman, but now I really enjoy it. This dog has been great for my health in so many ways!
Also in February, we watched the 49ers lose the Superbowl. But that didn’t get Batman down for too long.
Batman got to stay at a few different hotels in SF. We liked the Marina Motel because it has kitchens and free parking.
Finally, Batman visited Napa for the first time during Valentine’s Day weekend. It was a very memorable weekend because Eric (who also happens to be Batman’s co-owner) and I got engaged!
Of course Batman was there to enjoy the moment — I had his leash in my hand when Eric proposed.
We’re trying to think of a role for Batman in our wedding next year. We already have a ring-bearer, but I think he’d make a good flower dog, don’t you?
Lots of love to the A-T family!
Congratulations!!! Have you set the date?
I think Batman would make a stunning ring bearer. 🙂
DuKes’ Ma, Terri
My he is handsome! My fav is the first photo.
Congratulations! I had high aspirations for Kairo when I got married last November, but instead of ring bearer he opted to play the role of dog in the backyard. Good luck Batman!
LOL, yes this is certainly possible for the Batman. He will be almost 3 by the time of the wedding though, and Julie told me it gets easy when they turn 3. I have to remind myself of this whenever Batman is naughty.
That is too funny Sunil, but sounds like a good job for the wedding!
Jennie,
Awsome to hear from you & Batman.
Congrats on your engagement… if you play your cards right, the entire A-T family may just end up at your wedding. 🙂 What a better place to visit than San Francisco (I love that town) AND Napa Valley.
Batman looks awesome & sounds like both of you are having the time of your life in CA… & a healthy one… what a great decision to move.
U-Rock sends sloppy kisses & a great big hug… & is asking: “Bro, how come you don’t like waves? I think I need to come & teach you how much fun water is” 🙂
Send U-Rock over here to teach Batman how to surf! You would have to come, too, of course.
Congratulations on the engagement.
All of the photos are just beautiful. Glad to hear that things are going so well in CA. I’m so jealous….such gorgeous scenery. Nothing more relaxing than a long walk with the dog. On my last trip to the Bay Area, I visited Muir Woods. I didn’t want to leave! Half Moon Bay is spectacular too.
A great big hug from your Florida Auntie and sloppy kisses from Winston!
Thanks for the updates. Always great to see pictures of Batman and his adventures. Congratulations on the engagement, I am certain Batman will carry out his duties with great dedication and gusto.
(What do you think finally healed the scratchies in his ears?)
Glad to hear the batling and you are doing well in CA. MAybe you can send him to Carole before the wedding to teach him some wedding moves. I think he would be adorable in a doggie bow tie-just keep him away from the cake. They seem to like licking just the edge of the frosting so you would barely see it (don’t ask me how I know this 🙂
Wooo wooo a wedding! I hope we area all invited! A think a ring bearer or flower-dog both are cute ideas.
Hi, Jennie! Congratulations on your engagement! Batman looks to be settling in very nicely in CA. Glad he is not so itchy. How fortunate to have found such an amazing vet!
I am in total agreement with you about Denise Fenzi. LOVE her, she is smart, witty, straight-forward, but never makes you feel stupid. I am doing her precision heeling course online. I would also drive 2.5 hours to train with Denise too. The online course just started Monday, and it was not anything I didn’t already know but I really need something get me motivated.
I am so happy Batman’s ear issue is getting resolved, they look so horrible, poor guy.
You look happy and more gorgeous then ever. XOXO
Congratulations Jennie and Eric.
Jennie, it’s great to see you back on the blog. Jack has been following all your adventures on Batmanimal.
Glad to hear Batman is doing well and adjusting to life in California.
How exciting Jennie…Congratulations!
Batman should be best dog, of course! He can’t help give you away since he’s going with you. Or maybe DJ? Maybe you could teach him to bark on the speak now or forever hold your peace part. 🙂
I love all the pictures, beautiful scenery, beautiful dog, beautiful girl. We need to see some of Eric or does he prefer to shun the red carpet?!
Congratulations!
Jennie, it looks like your move has been a great adventure and started an amazing new chapter in your life! Congratulations on your engagement:)
Sooooo happy to hear that Batman is recovering from such a lousy jaunt with the itchies…you’ve been such a good mom! Sounds like you have a great connection with your new vet. I love California and I’m sure you will continue find many more wonderful things to experience. Batman is a lucky dog!!!!
hugs to all and sloppy kisses from the Sydners
Gunnar’s been asking when can we move to Cal.!
We always follow your many adventures & love
hearing about Batman’s very busy life!!
Congrats on your engagement & best wishes
for new beginnings & even greater new adventures.
I can see Raj shredding flowers all the way down the aisle. Well, it is one way to get those petals strewn!
You are in dog training paradise—many great things to do!
Batman can be the guardian of the ring bearer. They can walk down the aisle together.
