Not to sound like the fun police, but my vet told me to never to let my dog jump straight up in the air after a toy. She has had several dogs damage their spines and knees on bad landings.
Hi Lisa! Thank you for sharing that caution about encouraging them to jump straight up in the air. There are plenty of fun activities that don’t risk injuring our beloved darlings. I have switched over to playing with the “golf disc,” made by Innova. It’s a frisbee, but holds up MUCH better than those cheap ones that get chewed up in one play session. When Dutch chases after the disc, he often has to change direction as he lunges for it. He’s not jumping up vertically, but in a more horizontal trajectory, and continues forward in his movement. I think this should be OK, don’t you?

Dutch looks great in these pictures. He is strong and agile, very masculine. It’s obvious that he is a happy, healthy boy. Guess we just worry too much…..plus have heard too many horror stories that we want to be protective. 🙂

As you love Qwendi, you understand my deep connection to my darling Dutchie. We play together every day, and sometimes we don’t consider the risks. Dutch, I can understand, but if I make a mistake that compromises him, I would never get over it. I have always been blessed with the companionship of beloved pets all my life. I can’t even imagine how I might feel if he had choked to death on a tennis ball I had thrown. I am grateful to those who have opened my eyes. I am a little overwhelmed, though, with concerns that he might hurt his back jumping straight up, or doing any of the other 1001 things my Dutchie simply loves to do with incredible enthusiasm and agility. Thankfully, most do not involve vertical launches, but while I can’t control his every movement, I can through my direction influence the resulting actions. For a while, at least, our free-play will be less so.
Thank you, Terri, for those warm and loving compliments you gave Dutch. You noticed the most important thing that I have strived to achieve: a happy, healthy boy – well nourished, strong, agile, and loving – who goes after the sam Joie de vivre that I have. We are very happy together. I see that with you and Qwendi.
