I have Dutch’s undivided attention throughout the process of preparing these delectable SARDINE-LIVER TREATS:
2 Pounds Beef or Calf Liver
1 Can undrained Sardines, Olive Oil or Water-based. Water-based will be drier and crispier, and slightly less “fragrant,” oil-based will be a bit more rubbery and take longer to dry.
Throw everything in blender and puree until very smooth. Mixture will be thick.
Spread on two lined cookie sheets.
Bake in oven at LOWEST temperature for 1-2 hours or until dry and rubbery. I use convection heat set to 180 degrees.
Remove from oven, and cut into small squares. I make some 1/2″ x 1/2″, and some 3/4″ x 3/4″. Spread the squares back on the baking sheets and continue baking for about 30 – 45 minutes. The slight curve helps keep individual squares separate.
I store the treats in the freezer, and take out a small handful each morning to keep in the treat dish or put in my pocket. As I said in an earlier comment, your dog will lock on the irresistible scent and will do ANYTHING to please – for just a tiny little square! And you, beloved source of these heavenly delights, will have his undivided attention! However, while you are the fragrant epicenter of his universe, this appeal does not extend to friends and family, who may give you a wide berth if you forget to remove them from your pockets!
WARNING: Do not use a small crystal bowl to store these treats on your kitchen counter. My sister has inadvertently sampled them after mistaking them for chocolate bits. Let’s just say she was NOT happy.
Dutch might have his attention on the treats, but you have my attention for your oven. It’s so shiny…
(We only have the option for electric ranges where we live and I really want gas.)
This is actually a “dual fuel” range: the burners are gas, of course, but the ovens are electric, so they are self-cleaning (thank God!). This is my first experience with gas, and I just love it! My sister wanted gas so much. Like you, there was no access to natural gas where she lives, so they put in a propane tank!
Wow, this looks great, thanks for sharing! Finn hates sardines (what dog hates sardines, geez) but I am going to try and just see if he is just pulling my leg:-) Sydney agrees wholeheartedly that I should NOT leave out the sardines!
You almost had me…. until the warning! I bet they don’t taste anything like ‘chocolate bits’…..
I think that big smile says it all.
These look super! Thank you for sharing Beverly.
Viktor wanted to thank Dutch and his mom, we made these yesterday and Viktor has the same look in his eyes…..Loves them and they are as easy to make as Beverly said
Thanks for sharing
Jody
You’re welcome, Jody! But, you didn’t thank me for the “fragrance” that lingered in your kitchen long after the treats left the oven!
But, you know it’s worth it when you get that “look” in his eyes, and he gives you his best performance!
Libby and Ziva want to know if you send samples? I will add making these to my winter cooking list. Bet my girls will think they are divine. Thanks for sharing–
I made these today. Lola and Connor (my other furry love) absolutely LOVE them!
You were not joking about the smell. I have all my windows and doors open trying to get some fresh air in here. The dogs think it smells wonderful though 🙂
