What is your favorite tracking treat/food?
I want to start tracking my new baby….whenever he/she arrives..maybe the 2nd week.
I plan on feeding raw, so that is a factor. I was just looking at some dehydrated tripe….but worry that the smell might be to overpowering for tracking at first? Same with sardines..as a jackpot.
I’ll be feeding BRB…..I guess I could use little bits of that.
Has anyone tried dehydrated bits of chicken or turkey hearts?
Thanks,
Terri
Raw for me attracted too many ants/bees which Ziva did not like at all, so I used Freeze dried and cooked beef liver. Also used freeze dried raw (stella and Chewy’s patties all broken up. Merrick makes a freeze dried beef lung which was another big hit, plus the ants don’t get all over it like they did some of the other stuff. Ziva really liked anchovies as a jackpot $1/can at walmart and gas a . You could jackpot the raw in a container.
Lisa,
Now, I’m thinking I should buy a dehydrator. I was thinking about one for me, but never got it. But…if it’s for the dawgs….well, that’s a different story! 🙂
I was thinking also about using a container for my jackpot of smelly good things. 😉
I have a bunch of canned sardines (ick). Worse part of that is…….WHO wants to kiss a smelly sardine puppy? LOL I hate sardines. The sacrifices we make for our pups. 🙂
Thanks for the ideas!
Terri
You can also make your own fresh meat treats!
EASY HOMEMADE TREATS
Items needed:
Non Stick Fry Pan
Large Round Steak or Pork Chops or Calves Liver or Lamb
Scissors
1. Trim off all fat on the edges and in-between and if it has bone, remove that too. If using Calves Liver, thaw, and blot well with paper towel to remove excess blood.
2. Take a pair of scissors (outstanding tool for cutting meat) and cut the meat into manageable pieces.
3. Choose a fry pan (non stick works the easiest) that will hold the amount of meat you bought, and give the pan a small drop of oil or a quick spray of Pam.
4. Heat the pan until really hot and drop in the meat pieces in to sizzle. Keep your heat high but don’t leave the pan unattended.
5. Sprinkle on a little garlic powder or garlic salt if desired.
6. Let it sizzle for about a minute or two then flip over. Braise the other side (pour off the juice if there is too much) and remove from pan when the middle is pink (especially the Liver or it will crumble). Place on to paper towel, blot and let cool.
7. Take your scissors and cut all of the meat in strips about ¼” wide. Now take those strips and cut small pieces about the size of a ½ of a dime, (or whatever size you prefer).
8. Place small amounts into sealable snack baggies, then place those baggies into a sealable freezer baggie and place in freezer. When you need them, take out one or two baggies, place them in the frig and they will un-thaw. Of course the dogs love them frozen too, if you forget! They will unthaw quickly on the cupboard or in your pocket for training.
The process takes a little time but saves a lot of $$ and the dogs go crazy for them!
“BONE’ APPETIT ” MY FURRY FRIENDS! 🙂
Karen,
These are some good choices. I would worry that if I rely soley on liver….it would be too much for the pup. This way, I could mix it up….and there would always be a surprise! Use liver 2 or 3 times a week, maybe?
A way, also to check for food intolerances, or possible allergies?
I love my kitchen scissors. I have a pair of EMT scissors that I just love. Cut through bone if need be. Made easy work of splitting chicken backs in the old days. 🙂
Thanks Karen,
Terri
Whoa, FORGET the food (great tips though:) ….. Duke is getting a baby sister from the ‘S’ Litter!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited for you:-) … Who are you bringing home? Pictures, Name, All the details please. A Gavin Hummer…Awesome, Congrats!
Whoa Nellie! LOL Barb 🙂
Yep, DuKey will be sharing me with a sibling. I’ve already been telling him that, but I don’t think he gets’ it. LOL
I want a Show/Working pup. My goal is to train/trial in SchH and V rate. VA sure…why not? Anything is possible. 🙂
It takes alot for this to happen…plus the stars must be in proper alignment…but…maybe a *SuperMoon* will do?
I hope to be driving up to Charolotte and work with Gustavo..but…that is a bit later. Got to get the little munchkin first. 🙂
I don’t know if my new kid will be from the Ss. Don’t know if he or she have even been born yet. I’m being patient. But still, I love to see the baby pictures.
I guess what I’m doing now is *nesting* LOL. Ordered an X-pen last night…stocking up on baby toys…playing the name game. Checking out various harnesses for baby tracking. Seems you can start a baby tracking right away? hmmm I’m gonna try it.
I think I should have ordered a case of PuppyMix BRB from Judd…………too late now. I may have some in the freezer.
As soon as I find out who is coming to Ohio with me and DuKe….You guys will be the first to know. 🙂
Terri and DuKe (who is clueless as to what it means to share his Momma) Good thing there is plenty of me to go around.
It could be a pup from Q to Z! But Terri is hoping for sooner then later. 🙂
Yep…..Q to Z…..just don’t know. I am being patient. 🙂

My stand by is Happy Howie gourmet meat rolls , turkey is my favorite. Doesn’t crumble. Gustavo sometimes uses chicken feet on his track, but his favorite is royal canine kibble.
I was checking out the Happy Howie rolls on Clean Run yesterday….but…couldn’t remember which one you said didn’t crumble. Now I know…Turkey.
I wonder if he chops up the feet? Could you imagine a baby chewin’ on a chicken foot while on a track? Could be a good jackpot at the end…..:-)
Not sure about the kibble? Probably a lot easier…but I’m hoping to avoid kibble.
Terri
I have not run accross any of the happy howies that crumble. I have used lamb, beef and turkey Try KV vet for buying. Generally they are a lot cheaper and you can get the 2LB rolls. Ziva thinks they are crack. Still, the only thing I have found that does not attract the ants etc. is the beef lung that Merrick makes. Comes in a big bag and you can break down into tiny baby pieces, great for starting out when you leave a zillion of them for them to find
As far as the chicken feet in your tracking pouch—I guess there are worse things than being the “crazy cat lady” LOL
Lisa,
Worse part is………”I don’t own ANY cats!!!”
So, I guess that means “CRAZY?”
LOL
Ha, Ha, “if the Shoe fits” LOL LOL
The easiest and most high-value treat I’ve ever made is “SALMON-LIVER TREATS.” I think I’ve posted the recipe in the past, but I will post it again. Once they are dehydrated and cut into 1/2″ x 1/2″ squares, they are easily carried in your treat bag or even pockets. Dogs lock on the irresistible scent and will do ANYTHING to please – for just a tiny little square! Any you, beloved source of these heavenly delights, will have his undivided attention! However, while you are fragrant epicenter of his universe, this appeal does not extend to friends and family, who may give you a wide berth if you forget to remove them from your pockets!
I doubt that the SALMON-LIVER treats would be a smart choice for tracking, since they’d most certainly overpower the scent trail. When Carole was working with my Dutchie, she brought a dehydrated duck treat that he LOVED. It was odorless to me, so it was probably at the low end of the spectrum for dogs.
WHOOPS! I meant “Sardine-Liver,” not salmon liver. I’m in the middle of preparing a salmon rub, and I’ve got salmon on the mind!
