I’ve been taking Ember to Horizon Elementary School to visit the kids since she was 8 weeks old, and have participated in many activities, including: compare and contrast between her and my mom’s Aust. Cattledog, Gibbs, demos of agility, obedience, and nosework, and just letting her play with her ball so the kids can have some fun time. From the time Ember was 8 weeks to about a year, I took her in regularly so they could see the changes in her appearance and demeanor. I haven’t been able to take her very much this year, but the kids still know her and love her. I have had several kids stop me in restaurants because they recognize me as “Ember’s mom”. The parents have also commented on how much the kids talk about her at home. She has matured so much in a year and a half, and she even stands quietly while they pet her. She loves kids because of these visits. I took Cabrera to visit today, and the kids were able to notice several differences between him and Ember, including his laid back personality. They noticed that both Ember and Cabrera have a black spot on their tongue, which Ember got hers from cutting it on our fence last year and it healed in black. I’m not sure how Cabrera got his. It is interesting how the kids notice such small details.
While I was there with Cabrera, the kids gave me some thank you notes and a gift card to Petsmart to thank me for bringing her this year. Here are some examples of the many cards that we received.
Julie, Ember may not have gone to the Sieger show, but according to one little girl, she won first place and beat “no one special”, and is the “finest dog in forever”.
The comments from some of these kids were hilarious. Some of my favorites were “Ember is the boss”, “I love sweet dogs named Ember”, according to Gavin (hehe): “Ember is awesome”, and one little boy even wrote a song about her:
“Who’s the dog with the super cool tricks!
Oh, that dog is super slick!
Oooooooohhhhhhhhh
It’s….Ember!” (epic guitar solo)
I’m taking Ember to Horizon next Friday to participate in their field day for the last time this school year. I think she’ll have a field day with them. 🙂
This gave me such a smile. The podium picture is the best and you are the beautiful trainer!
I thought you’d like that. 🙂
Black spot on the tongue means they are intelligent. I think all GSD have a black spot on their tongue someplace.
I did not know that all GSD have a black spot somewhere on their tongue. I knew that they were intelligent, though. Sometimes too intelligent…
Maybe I should say a black spot inside their mouth not always on their tongue. But that is one of the old wive’s tales …. the black spot means you have a smart dog.
That is great Jennifer. So nice of you to share Ember with the kids. That is a great way to get them used to children. I bet if you ever don’t want her anymore the girl that did the !st prized drawing would take her in a heartbeat.
I have had many kids tell me that they will take Ember if I don’t want her anymore, but they would give her right back! She has turned into the best girl with a wonderful personality, but she’s still a lot to handle at times, and that’s after she’s calmed down… a lot!
Good job Jennifer, Ember and Cabrera. It’s great the kids made you so many nice cards.
Jennifer, it is so heartwarming to get all those cards from the kids! I bet you all had a blast on the field trip:)
