Singer and I went to Arizona last weekend to judge an AHBA herding trial. Even though I was one of the judges, Singer could still compete but not take a placement.
It was a new place, new stock, and a course Singer had not worked here before. As usual he was stellar.
While I judged Singer stayed in the back of the car with the back hatch door open. Everyone was impressed by how well behaved he was. I was often away and out of site of the car while judging. Comments were that sheep, people, bitches in heat and intact males were walking by the car all the time and he responded to none of it. He just sat or lay in the car and took it all in. He never barked, cried out or tried to leave the car at any time. Even when people stood right in front of him and talked to him.
When he was taken into the ring, he impressed everyone once again. In the end he earned his AHBA HTAD IIIs title and two championship points. Eight more points and he will have his second herding championship.
After the trial on Sunday, I asked the daughter of the owner if she would like to work Singer. She had seen Singer at several trials in California while trailing with her own dogs. She and her mother have always been taken with Singer and his ability to work. She took him into the pens and moved some of the stock around and put together a large group to work. They went into an arena and put the whole group through a course. As she was working the sheep she shouted out to her mother “I am in love. I want this dog.” She had a great time and was even more impressed with him after actually working him.
Singer continues to make a mark where ever he goes and hope to finish his second herding championship soon.
