Mr. DuKe has decided to run free in his Birthday Suit for his upcoming 1 year birthday. I wanted to get some nice pictures for his birthday BUT……He has decided that this is the perfect time to blow his coat. He’s not quite naked just yet, but Oct. 1st, I’m sure it’s possible. He has lost most of his mane, pants, and tail…and points N-S-E-W. I took advantage of the nice day yesterday and bathed him…hoping to help speed up the de-nuding of my boy. I used the Murphy’s Oil soap and was really pleased with it.
Then I got out the Metro Air Force dryer….ummm we took it VERRRRY slow and ended on a favorable note. So that was good. Now, I have a squeeky clean naked Birthday boy! 🙂
OK Terri (and everyone who reads this) pardon my ignorance but what the heck causes that? Is it an “up north” thing? I don’t recall ever seeing any of our GSD lose their coat. I must see a picture of DuKe! Digger is shedding like crazy and I’ve been brushing him but he still has A LOT of fur. On that note has anyone used a Furminator? A friend said it’s wonderful and I was thinking of getting one.
I haven’t gotten a dryer yet but Digger loves my blow dryer. Every time I get it out he comes in and gets into position to be dried, it’s pretty funny.
Nancy…..hmmmmmmmm
Probably confused you on my choice of words. Sorry 🙁
I say my GSDs are naked when they blow their coats…and have no fluffy neck hair, or fluffy pants and tail. Still have plenty of hair…just minus all the fluffy stuff. To me, they look naked w/o all their fluffy stuff.
On the Furminator……..Yes….when they are blowing coat. Use with care on guard hairs. Best remedy, imo, for a GSD blowing coat..is a bath…and using a blower on them. I really like my Metro dryer.

Not to worry Terri – I am easily confused when it comes to these terms:) I am learning so much from this blog! Digger is still very fluffy although shedding. The groomer at Petco told me to use an undercoat rake and then a wire brush. He really likes brushing I just want to make sure I am doing the best for his beautiful coat. I do want to get the blower because he really likes his kiddie pool.
Nancy,
Both are good tools to use. If you get a Furminator, you will see how much more dead or loose hair they will pick up. They are especially good for neck, pant, tail and flank area…..you just should be a bit more gentle. imo? Another brush to think about is a boar bristle brush. They help distribute oil to the coat.
Blowing the coat out removes alot of loose fur. When I would groom Rudi, the birdies liked the clumps for their nests. The Metro dryer I have has Hi and Low settings and eventually the cool air does become a little warm. It’s not enough to do damage though.
With Digger loving his pool and you using a doggie blower on him, he’ll be naked like his bro in no time!
Think of a collie….then think of the short haired version. That’s what I mean by naked. 🙂
Terri and Sir Fuzzy Wuzzy Had No Hair, DuKe
Digger doesn’t give the birds a chance to get his hair balls because he likes to eat them! Ron and I tag team him, I brush and give the hair ball to Ron to get rid of otherwise once it hits the grass and starts to blow away he wants to take off after it. His fur must taste pretty good because the kitty has started to eat it. I guess I need to vacuum more!
