Does this look like a pointer? He is waiting for his ball to drop.DSC_0046

Carole, Kai’s interest in his ball seems to have come a long way. But, he’s kind of a pain to try to play retrieving games with since he won’t drop it. Actually, he drops it to tease you and when you reach for it, he grabs it up really fast.  My solution is to try to quickly put my shoe over it when he drops it. This is kind of a dangerous proposition since I don’t wear steel-toed tennis shoes. When he was a puppy and grabbed something we didn’t want him to have, we’d lift his front feet off the ground and that usually did the trick. As he got older, this became less effective so then we’d lift his back feet off the ground, like a wheelbarrow.  Tonight, first we tried this to get him to drop the ball.

And we tried this

Then this………..

Nope, still not letting go….  about 85 lbs of big ole rotten silly bratty boy. 🙂

Hmmm. That smart boy is teaching you how to fetch;)

Try holding 2-3 balls. Throw the 1st one. Then, with the remaining ones, wave one at him, drop them, juggle them, throw them in the air and let them fall to the ground occassionally, one at a time, chase after it. Look like you’re having tons of fun.

He’ll come running to you for the next ball, but he doesn’t get it, until he drops the one he has. You can even try food to get him to drop it. The second he drops it, throw him the next one.

Then you can start teaching him that he only gets the next ball, when he drops the one he has right it in front of you. This may take a little time, but he’ll get the picture and start to become more comfortable dropping that ball closer and closer to you – as long as you never take it from him. He’ll learn that to get the next ball, he has to drop the one he has – right in front of you. Hope this helps!

Randy’s been telling me to buy another ball and just asked me tonight where I bought that one and I said Chicago. (At NASS) He said well go back to Chicago and buy another. 🙂 Yes, that is very good advice – I try this with a frisbee and it works to an extent but it doesn’t have the same appeal as the ball. Identical balls are the way to go!

Thank you!

Yes, the two toys used should be the same. It is the same method as the two-toy game taught at training class.

OMG, he is so handsome!!! I love the pointer pose. He is just ready to go!

I agree with the Perrine family — two ball is the way to go. I also pretend I have an imaginary dog whenever Batman is not coming back with the ball with good energy. I will turn my back to him and proceed to play fetch with my imaginary dog, Robin. Robin is the perfect dog in that she always does everything I command! I toss the ball up and praise Robin for dropping it right at my feet. I use a happy voice, give her praise, even reach down and pat her head, and look like a TOTAL lunatic to passersby.

But it really works! Batman very quickly wonders why I’m having so much fun playing with another dog, and comes back with much better energy after that!

Picture #1 – OMG! Kai is drop-dead gorgeous!!!
However, picture #10 is my most favorite. For those of you who have never met Randy—he is not a little guy. 😉 That’s hysterical.

So when are you going to brag about Kai getting his CGC?

🙂 this is how Randy looks taking down a suspect…at least he didn’t try to choke Kai out for the drugs, in this case the ball.

And funny I was just thinking about that CGC tonight. I need to dig out the papers and see if I want to send it in. A-T YKY, MF, CGC

LOL, yes! The CGC is a big deal — congratulations!!!

Scarlett, I will post shopping information about balls separately. Everyone needs a pair of good strong balls.

Holy lunatics, Jenny. That is so funny! I laughed and laughed about that but the funniest part is about 5minutes later, I’m kind of visualizing what Kai might look like if I did this.

I read the post to Randy and after I read “he is so handsome”, of course he acted like that comment was meant for him. About your imaginary dog, he agreed Yes, lunatic. He suggested you might be Joker. LOL

Oh yes, I am insane! I think this has been well established by now, after many months on the blog!

Denise Fenzi taught me the imaginary dog trick. She is very good at it!

The two toy works really well. I toss Winston’s favorite “chickie”. He sprints for it and runs back towards me full speed. I have another “chickie” in my hand and he drops the 1st one at my feet so I will throw the 2nd one. Great exercise for him without me having to move a step!
Kai is such a handsome boy. LOVE the picture of you tugging the ball as Randy wrestles the monster! Great photos.

Kai is absolutely GORGEOUS.
I loved the last series of pictures… totally hysterical.

P.S. How come your grass is so green while mine is still all brown? Don’t we live in the same state? 🙂

I buy these balls in Germany so going to Chicago is a lot more reasonable. Actually Jennie found a place online that sells the Bende balls (actually from Hungary) at very good price. NO not any of the typical dog/schutzhund places either.

Randy,
You must be one strong dude! Manhandling an 85 # GSD and his ball is serious business.
You should add “No GSDs were harmed in the making of this video”.
LOL
Kai looks like alot of fun!
