The E-litter (Gavin x Bailey) turned 7-weeks this weekend and we celebrated by giving them a tatt, as in tattoo. Since Caitlin is on vacation, very conveniently planned to miss the tattooing, We are so on to you Caitlin! However, Eva and her family came over to visit the pups and Jackie and I recruited her help. She handled it well. 🙂 It did really help to have that third pair of hands, thank you!
This week the puppies will have their well-puppy exam, then off for their temperament test and evaluation with Gustavo Sanchez. The puppies will be given a vaccine a Modified-Live vaccine for Parvo + Distemper at nearly 8 weeks. I follow Dr. Dodds vaccination protocol, except I give that first vaccine a little earlier then she recommends. I just did not feel comfortable sending puppies home without giving them any vaccine. So if you wish that your puppy is NOT vaccinated before bringing him/her home let me know.
These are Dr. Dodds recommendations:
CANINE VACCINATION PROTOCOL – 2012
MINIMAL VACCINE USE
W. Jean Dodds, DVM
HEMOPET
938 Stanford Street
Santa Monica, CA 90403
310-828-4804; Fax 310-453-5240
e-mail: hemopet@hotmail.comNote: The following vaccine protocol is offered for those dogs where minimal vaccinations are advisable or desirable. The schedule is one I recommend and should not be interpreted to mean that other protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be less satisfactory. It’s a matter of professional judgment and choice.
Age of Pups
Vaccine Type
9 – 10 weeks
14 – 16 weeks
20 weeks or older, if allowable by law
1 year
1 year
Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV (e.g. Merck Nobivac [Intervet Progard] Puppy DPV)
Same as above
Rabies
Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV
Rabies, killed 3-year product (give 3-4 weeks apart from distemper/parvovirus booster)
Perform vaccine antibody titers for distemper and parvovirus every three years thereafter, or more often, if desired. Vaccinate for rabies virus according to the law, except where circumstances indicate that a written waiver needs to be obtained from the primary care veterinarian. In that case, a rabies antibody titer can also be performed to accompany the waiver request. See www rabieschallengefund.org
Pictures to follow tomorrow!
Thank you for posting this information. I have been discussing vaccinations with my husband. I will probably use a modified version to fit our schedule. Can’t wait to see pictures!
Julie, I follow the the Dodds protocol as well. I did have to booster Pieka’s parvo and distemper this year – they came in a little low on the titer. I expect this will be the last vaccination for parvo or distemper she’ll ever receive.
I follow state law for rabies vaccinations, particularly for dogs who are out and about actively. Many states have an exemption from rabies for dogs who are elderly/have health problems, etc……I do have my vet file an exemption for Whiskey.
I agree with you, Julie. I don’t like sending the pups home without any vaccination.
