First off, I could kick myself for not having my camera with me when this happened……
Duke and I go out for his potty break, in his mouth is one of his unstuffed critter toys. He trots out into the yard, head held high…never breaking his trot as he is peeing. LOL…then he trots over to some leaves collected by the fence….he proceeds to dig (he moves backwards as he digs) a hole in the leaves, he gets the hole just right and drops his unstuffy into the leaf hole…and then covers it up.
I have never seen a dog or puppy do that with a toy, food yes, but not a toy.
I thought it was hilarious, plus very adorable! He is something else. 🙂
DuKe’s Mom, Terri
My Papillon does this with his “crack ball” and blankets. He buries the ball in a blanket just so he can dig it back out. Endless fun for him, but he pulls the blanket and digs at it with his front paws. He can take the blanket to the other side of the room in the process. Its annoying if the blanket was covering you up! He’s still really funny to watch do it, though.
“Crack ball”? What is that? 🙂
Your little guy sounds pretty funny. It’s amazing the ways they find to entertain themselves.
Are you getting excited about your “new kid”?
Terri
Terri,
We call Token’s ball his crack ball because he can’t live without it. If he loses it, he won’t rest until he finds it. If we buy him a new toy, he’ll play with it, but he always goes back to his crack ball. The ball fits perfectly in his mouth and thank goodness it has lost its squeaker because he would drive us insane! We have 5 more crack balls in hiding in case he ever does truly lose it. He is a blast to have. I got him my last year of college and he has been the best companion the past 9 1/2 years. We are very excited about the new puppy! Only a few more days until they are born! I bet you are having so much fun with Duke. He is so cute!
Jennifer
Are these Bailey/Gavin’s?
Yep, Jennifer is planning on a Gavin – Bailey pup.
Several years ago I couldn’t figure out how I could lose all my left hand gloves – other than my failure to put them away — but not the right hand gloves. One day I saw a few fingers sticking out of the ground and found my glove, so I looked around for signs of other buried gloves. I found several.
It turns out one of our previous GSD’s used to bury my work gloves in our wood chip landscape area. Funny thing was, he’d only take my left glove and go bury it, never my right. One day I finally watched him dig a hole, drop the glove in, then push wood chips over it with his nose.
I recovered most of them, but to this day I still have an excess of right hand gloves.
That is too funny! I’m surprised the neighbors didn’t call the police on you. “Hello officer, yes my neighbor seems to be burying bodies in their landscaping. Yes, I’m serious. You need to see all the gloved hands sticking out of their mulch!!!” LOL LOL
Gotta watch them dogs..they’ll get us in trouble.
My Rudi used to do that with my shoes. Only the left shoe. Whenever he got excited he would run and grab a Lt shoe and run around the house with it. 🙂 Weird I know.
Terri
Garth that is so funny! I would love to know what the deal is with the left glove.
Garth, that’s hysterical. Are you right or left handed?
Hope you and da boys are well!
I’m pretty ambidextrous, but slightly right hand dominate. It was funny after I figured out what was going on. I’d find a couple fingers sticking up out of the ground. I thought if the UPS man every saw it on a delivery he’d never stop again.
Oh yeah, and the da boys are doing great. Kirsch watches for the our Pileated Woodpecker to fly in so he can bark and make it fly.
Good to hear!
Hi, Terri–
The first week we had Isa, (who will be 3 in a couple of weeks), she proudly carried her little stuffed sheep outside, (in the snow–it was February, and we live in northern Michigan) looked around until she found dirt near the foundation of our house, dug a hole, and buried it. She’s still weird that way with stuffed toys and chew toys!
Jil,
who is Isa out of? Sounds like it might be an A-T puppy-ism?? LOL
We just came in from another potty break and he went right to his bury sight and started looking all over for his buried treasure. Shoot, I guess I should have left it there for him. Poor guy.
Terri
Isa is I litter out of Allie.
Allie and Cadence are half sisters, both are daughters of Funny (Faye vom Kirschental)
Aha….so it’s a Funny thing? LOL
Yes, they are. I hope I get one that looks like Ziva. She is beautiful!
I think you just made Lisa’s day!
Her nickname is Z-Evil one:)
My husband calls my other Papillon Lucy, Lucipher. Haha. 🙂
Let’s see, this would be the E litter-You could go with Evil vom Alta-Tollhaus LOL. Are you in MI also? I keep telling Julie she needs to get another dog in NY so i have some company!
Sorry, Lisa. I’m in IN. I’m close enough to visit the puppies! We have a few names that start with E that we’re considering. We already have a collar and they’re not born yet!
Terri, I love the ‘tude your little guy is showing! What I enjoy more is how much you are enjoying your new man. Thank you for sharing these endearing stories, they certainly brighten my day.
You don’t think she is possibly smitten with her puppy do you Julie??? 😉
Me? HaH! Smitten over a widdle cuddly wuddly puppy wuppy (NOT) 😉
He IS Sir DuKe, head held high, always something in his mouth (yes Dutch) even in his sleep.
Sharp as a tack, he is. Good eye contact, excellent recall, learning a nice proper sitz and platz w/o rolling onto a hip. Walks ok on a leash, did a little last night with him walking on my left side. Ofcourse, he gets lots of yummy treats as lures….but eventually those will disappear.
Does well with nail trims, ok with brushing. He just had trouble keeping still.
LOVES to chase his bunnies and KILL them!
Smitten? Ok I’ll agree. I can’t help it though, he’s just a little shit! 🙂
DuKe’s Mom
Good job, Terri, with you widdle cuddly wuddly puppy wuppy!
That’s why they call it Puppy Love!
Hey, I know that song! LOL
Yes and as our puppies become adults, our love of them grows. It’s been 12 years since I’ve had a baby pup. To me,it’s like another chapter in life….They’ll be “The DuKe Years”. 🙂
Terri
We’re back, after months of no contact. Peter and I had a good laugh after reading this post. Rudi will bury his outdoor rope toys and does the same backward dig. We keep a rake by the backdoor. Just wait, your yard will never be the same but you will have lots of laughter. Beware of holes.
I know, that backward dig is hilarious isn’t it? We have lots of room for Duke to dig in….I just need to find an out of the way place. I can’t wait to play in the snow with him.
My Rudi would help me plant stuff or take care of weeding. I would point to the spot where I wanted the hole…and tell him “go ahead, dig it” and he’d dig me a nice hole. 🙂 Funny stuff, good memories.
Terri
Yep, our Rudi is the best hole digger ever. I’m just happy he hasn’t removed any trees (our Lag Gidget was real good at that). Also, I had a Duke when I was a kid, he was my best friend!
Rudi would love the snow, I’m sure, but alas if it snows enough to play in snow in Naples, then the climate changes have really gone wacky. Are you in Fargo as in ND? That is where Peter’s parents and family were from.
No, I’m from Ohio. Fargo story begins with “Marko” aka
Bismark (needed a B name…but knew I would call him Marko) that was about 18 years ago. My next boy to come my way was Rudi…but Rudi (the name I wanted to call him) needed an F name, so I decided another city in ND and it was Fargo (enjoy the movie also). Don’t cha know, I’ve never been to ND, eh. 🙂
