Nova Science: How Smart are Dogs

Ok here is a cat barking like a dog until he/she realizes that he/she has been caught

What Do Dog Barks Mean?
Hit the interactive button to take the quiz. Do not try to match the sound of the bark to the breed of dog, but rather the type of bark to the description underneath the dog (when you mouse over). As we all know what a GSD sounds like and none of the barking audio is of a GSD, that really threw me off.

I wonder if German dogs speak a different language. I was really bad at this, yet I always know what is going on with da boys when I hear them. They didn’t have the “I pushed my ball through the fence and now you have to find it and throw it back” bark, or the “Ekko stole my stuffed toy squirrel and is ripping off all the legs” bark.

Very true Garth, I think you just found some holes in their research. My guess is you had a difficulty interpreting the barks because they all were small dog barks…. and they just seem to speak with a different accent.

Da boys are a bit more energetic than the ones they had. What they would interpret a bark meaning “hordes of zombies are attacking the house and we must either fight them or run for our lives” would really be “a chipmunk/rabbit/squirrel is in our yard and we would like to chase it away”.

I too am a failure at barking as a second language. I am only able to understand a few simple phrases after years of studying the language.

I wonder if we can hire that border collie where we work. I seldom see that kind of mental horsepower in the management ranks. 🙂

I confused “Don’t leave me!” with “Let’s go outside!” or “Stranger!”. Fenris’s messages are either “Don’t go upstairs yet! I have to pee!” or “You’ve gone upstairs so I must guard the house!” (i.e bark at every noise or person he thinks he sees outside)
