Hi everyone it’s Pam again (Lily’s mom) with another dog food question. Has anyone ever used “Flint River Ranch” pet food? I got some samples the other day and Lily is really in love with the whitefish & potato with no side effects as of yet. Just wondered if any of you have tried it. Let me know what you think of it if you have.

Hi Pam! Flint River Ranch is just an average food, in my opinion. The Trout & Potato variety is better than their normal offerings, but it still includes quite a lot of grains which are controversial ingredients for dog food.

That being said, it’s always a good idea to rotate your main protein sources. Since this one is all fish, it makes for a good break from chicken or beef.

I do like the fact that they don’t use any by-products or artificial preservatives though.

If Lily really likes it, is doing well on it and has no issues with it (skin problems, itching, smells, etc.) then that is what is important!

She has a sensitive tummy and is prone to diahreha. Fish and bison are the only two that seem to do the trick. The salmon sounds like it might be a good one for her. Thanks ever so much!

Have you tried Fromm’s fish kibble options? Batman gets the grain-free Salmon Tunalini from time to time when we’re playing with the treat-dispensing ball. He really enjoys it, and the ingredient list is better than most (see below):

http://frommfamily.com/products/four-star/dog/dry/grain-free-salmon-tunalini

“A grain-free recipe made with fresh wild salmon and tuna with a medley of mediterranean garden vegetables and olive oil.”

Salmon, salmon meal, peas, potatoes, pea flour, dried tomato pomace, tuna, whole dried egg, sardine meal, anchovy meal, chicken liver, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), salmon oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), flaxseed, cheese, monocalcium phosphate, olive oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), carrots, celery, parsley, lettuce, tomatoes, spinach, zucchini, eggplant, chicken cartilage, potassium chloride, salt, chicory root extract, yucca schidigera extract, sodium selenite, folic acid, taurine, Vitamins, Minerals, Probiotics

I don’t like the idea of grains. I will order some samples from Fromms….it sounds good enough for ME to eat! Thanks!

I feed Fromm, love it, the food is always fresh and all my dogs love it dry or mixed with meat. It’s a small family owned company and has great quality control. I love the variety as well.

Fromm would definitely be better than Flint River Ranch!

Good choice to decide on something else!
Flint River touts that they use “farm raised fish” instead of wild caught. Fact: there could be as many as 50,000 fish jammed into a small space, causing injury to each other. Antibiotics are sometimes added to the water and their food to prevent infections from these injuries. Parasite’s, sea lice and blindness are common in farm raised fish.
FR also contains Canola Oil. Studies on animals disclose that it is unhealthy for the pet’s cardiovascular system. Like its predecessor, rape seed oil, Canola is associated with fibrotic lesions of the heart. Also, the FDA does not allow Canola in infant formulas as there are indications that it retards growth.
Steer clear of farm raised fish for people too! 😉
