Matt and I spent a week in England during the first part of the Olympics. About a year ago, we were lucky enough to be drawn for tickets to see two football matches (soccer to those with no British or European herritage ) – Japan v Morrocow and Spain v Honduras:
Then on for some touring – first stop the City of York where everything is so old it is starting to warp and sag. The buildings that is, not Matt!!
Sweets anyone?
Then on to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.
Then back up to the city of Newcastle upon Tyne where I grew up:
Above is the Tyne Bridge and below is the Theatre Royal.
The fishing village of Craster on the NE coast, just south of the Scottish border.
Dunstonburgh Castle in Northumberland
Apologies for the quality of the snaps. As you were not allowed to take full size cameras and lenses into the Olympic Stadium, I chose to leave mine Stateside and take only my pocket point and shoot. I didn’t bother messing with the color, so you are seeing the shades of a true British summer. Ah well, at least it didn’t rain!
Isn’t Chatsworth the real Downton Abbey?
You piqued my curiosity so I checked. It states they used Highclere Castle in Hampshire for the external shots, but there was no mention of Chatsworth.
Thank you, thank you for sharing these photos. I love them. I feel like I was there.
Derbyshire and Northumberland look like my kind of place, as does Craster. I would love to go shopping in York.I so glad the buildings were sagging and not Matt!
Thank you for the mini-vacation Andrea!
Maybe one day a few of us can get together and go. I can be your tour guide!
Count me in, I would love to go. I went to Germany and Austria a looooong time ago and it was incredible. I would absolutely love to see England. I would have to visit Scotland too, since I would need to tour a few of the single malt Scotch distilleries! Those are great pictures Andrea!
I was so hoping you would say that! I would love to go.
My grandfather was born in England and immigrated to Canada and then the USA. The family line was also that we were descended from Vikings with 7/8 of my grandparents immigrating from Sweden. But when I had DNA testing done it said I was Icelandic and Orcadian. Never heard of Orcadian but my boss who is quite the world traveler knew immediately. Orkney Islands are part of Scotland to the North. So that is my long way of saying I have two connections to the UK.
Julie/Lee – I absolutely love Scotland and have spent countless summer holidays up there. The Isle of Skye is absolutely beautiful so if the Orkney Islands are remotely similar, that would be a fabulous trip.
Thank you Andrea, what a treat for you to get to see the games. The architecture in some of these places just amaze me, unlike in the US where everything is disposable for newer and better.
I am so envious! I love the UK and the Olympics. Thank you for sharing!
I would love a trip like this! Andrea, thank you so much for posting. I found it quite interesting that you couldn’t take a full-size camera into the Olympic Stadium.
Gorgeous photos!
I love the pictures Andrea. Makes me want to go back. I have not been there for nearly 10 years and Jack has never been. I would love him to see London and the English countryside, as well as Ireland as he has Irish roots!
You should make a point of planning a trip. Would Aiden be too much for your Mum to look after?
Great photos Andrea. I have heard that scotland is wonderful and I have a friend that goes there every year. Do you think the Chatsworth house could house the AT family for a visit? England may never be the same LOL
