I personally called Shannon at the Nature’s Variety # below and she confirmed the recall due to an “off odor” and that “the product was expiring more quickly than the expiration date shown on the bag, due to the preservative, and they are checking into it”. She said that “the products hold no dangers to pets or humans, they are doing it as precaution only”.

Reed Howlett, Nature’s Variety CEO, stated, “At Nature’s Variety, we make every effort to ensure that all of our products meet the highest quality standards. We’ve found that some bags of Prairie Beef Meal & Barley Medley Kibble for Dogs have an off-odor smell. To be sure that our consumers only receive the freshest and highest quality product possible, we have decided to voluntarily recall all Prairie Beef Meal & Barley Medley Kibble for Dogs from the marketplace.”

The products impacted are listed below:

• UPC# 7 69949 60420 4 – Prairie Beef Meal & Barley Medley Kibble for Dogs 5 lb
• UPC# 7 69949 60425 9 – Prairie Beef Meal & Barley Medley Kibble for Dogs 15 lb

• UPC# 7 69949 60432 7 – Prairie Beef Meal & Barley Medley Kibble for Dogs 3 oz sample

No other Nature’s Variety products are affected.

Thanks for the info Karen. What is your opinion of Fromm food, (made in Wi.)?

I think that their food is MUCH better than most, I just don’t like the Sodium Selenite that is in it.

Some of their lineup looks pretty good for commercial food (some of the “Four Star” and “Gold” products) however some of it includes grains, etc. Were you looking at a specific one?

I have been feeding Fred the “gold” adult large breed, no grain, soy or wheat. Trying to incorporate more raw. Just wondering what the expert’s thought of Fromm.

GOOD FOR YOU incorporating some raw Patti! Yeah!!!
Don’t forget that you can rotate your food! Fred would get a lot of different healthy nutrients from each rotation since they have so many varieties to choose from. 🙂

The “Gold” line is a decent alternative to most commercial kibble. The first three ingredients are protein sources which is good. There are still some “borderline” ingredients, in my opinion, but definitely better than most. If you ever have questions regarding a specific brand, this website is very helpful:

I fed Gold for over 6 months until Kayla & Garbo developed skin problems, which they never had before. Now feed H/K and Blue Ridge Beef (raw). Skin and coat are doing better but it is slow recovery process.

The “Gold” variety still contains some grains which are the ingredients I consider “borderline”. Grains are a huge cause of skin problems from a dietary stand point. Good thing you have them on some great food now!

I’ve gotten much good info from Lee and the book he recommended “Raw and Natural Nutrition for Dogs” Lew Olson PhD.
