After training yesterday at Gustavo’s, I gave Brody (Alta-Tollhaus Broderick ”Brody” B-litter Dux x Pala) a chance to cool down in the water.
In this last picture it looks like he has something red in his eye. He doesn’t, it’s just a reflection of his gear bag.
I took off his harness to wrap him in a towel and dry him off. I turned around for half a second to put his harness in the truck, turned back to towel him off some more and he was gone. Off like a bolt of lightning racing across the grass to jump back in the pond, now with no leash or harness to impede on his fun. As I was chasing him down I pictured myself going in chest deep to retrieve my pup. Luckily I caught him at the last second before he dove in.
I think he might like the water…
Looks like he is having fun! Do you like using a harness better than a collar?
Hi Lisa! With young pups I do like the harness better than the collar. The harness is for restraint, which is pretty much all a pup this young needs. I believe the collar is for communication and correction, which will come later in his life. Right now it’s all about trying to build a great relationship with my new buddy. This is, of course, just my personal belief. I always advise people to listen to their trainer first and foremost since they know the dog, and each one is unique!
As many times as I have seen AT Sheps go for the water, all I can do is look at my girl and laugh at her tip toeing across the puddle I left on the patio because “HOW DARE YOU WATER THE PLANTS and expect me to walk across here” One of these days – I will have an AT dog and see what fun water can be! One thing good, her pups took after Gavin instead of her when it came to water!
Great picture’s as usual Lee. The last one is priceless, after you hunted the poor boy down and spoiled his plans, he is really giving you the eye (or finger), if he could!
Haha! Great last picture! My thought for that caption was to add on a sinister laugh…. (Muuuuhahahaha..grrr!)
Does that fan in the crate REALLY helps with the heat? I am tempted to get one but I am not sure if it works good.
That last pic is so hilarious. He’s giving you the evil look already!!
Josie, it does help with his temperature, not necessarily with the temperature in the truck though. It really helps if your dog is wet since it speeds up evaporation, and thus, cooling. Spraying him down with a water bottle then turning on the fan works well. I like this one because it runs off of your 12v car system or batteries and it has two speeds. If the outside temperature is 100 degrees and there is no breeze at all, it doesn’t do much if they are dry. Here is the fan I bought:

Yes, the fans help. This is a good model to use. Go to WalMart.
Obviously, the AT water gene lives on 🙂
so next time let him off leash so he can go for a swim!
I’m with Julie! There are no sharks or gators in that pond—let the boy swim!
I’ll be out there Sunday and will let him go for a few laps!
