Any ideas on what to do with Oso’s ears? Oso rips the ear supports out and tears them up. Julie sends us more in the mail. We glue the supports back in and repeat the process.

I personally like Tear Mender, you glue the inside edges together like a teepee and they stay together pretty well, when they come apart on their own, if they are not standing you do it again, usually if they stay in a week they will stand. I have seen this work great with multiple dogs, one was mine, he had a real large head and heavy ear cartilage and he was 9 months old.

That sounds interesting Lorie. Tear Mender is a glue? Like a craft glue? So not forms you just bring together the two edges of the ears?

It is actually a very safe glue, I ordered it from Tractor Supply Store, it’s super easy to use and the bottle lasts a long time, remember I told you about my friend that had the Vegas son with horrible floppy ears, I glued them for her and he waon his class at NASS. 😮

Yes Julie, you bring the ears together from the inside edges, and you do it low, right at the base of his head, so they are standing and there is no gap for them to scratch, if you do it that way Oso can’t take them apart, they don’t even react to wearing them because nothing feels like it is “on them”, they don’t have to wear a collar. I’ve never had it not work, and I’ve helped a few people

Good Kelli, make sure when you glue them to glue the back edges of the ears together, not the skin part on the inside. I do about 1/3 inch width, when they come apart some hair will come off, but not much and it grows back in no time.

Lorie, this part lost me:

Can you explain for us old folk? Do you have pictures?

Carole , I’ll see if I can find a picture to show you, let me see if I could explain it better…… If you were looking at Oso head on, you would take his ears and push them together from the bases to make them touch, you start from the bottom and put glue along the edges of the left ear on the furry side, than the right edge of the right ear, again from the back of the ear on the hair side is pressed into the glue on the left ear. Ideally you want to hold them together to dry for 3 minutes, someone needs to hold him, when they dry and you release him the ears will look like a teepee, they will stay up for days and even a week if done correctly, I let them come apart on their own, usually the ears will be standing fine as its a normal position, and the ears look very natural. I have noticed the long coats tend to need more help than stock coats, probably the fluffier hair. I will see if my Shepherd Maddie will let me take a video of me doing her ears and send it to you.

Lorrie, Is Gavin your dog? If so, he is Oso’s father.

I think it would be best to trim the hair first before gluing.

You can put an elizabethan collar on so he can’t reach his ears.

It will be pain but it works.

Oso tears the supports out when he is in his crate during the day. I believe they are glued in very well because he does not have hair left inside his ears but there is plenty left on the supports. Oso ignores pain.

Do you think he would keep a collar on in the crate?

You may have go put an Elizabethan collar on him while he wears the supports.

Yes. He would keep the colar on in the crate. I have had dogs have to wear them after surgery for spay and neuter before in the crate so that will rest. Like Julie said, they are a pain, but it will work.

Canis Callidus sells ear forms, I used Perma Type surgical glue, no amount of scratching will take those ear forms off once they are in, they are that good. I left the forms in for 3 weeks until they start coming off on their own. As soon as you take them out using a special glue remover (surgical glue remover) give a couple of days and see how his ears are holding up, put them in again asap for another week or so.

Kelli, Oso is such a handsome dog, and already so accomplished. He’s like all the boys I’ve raised: they want to be free of all encumbrances, nekked is always best, so it doesn’t surprise me that he wants to rip out those ear restraints. My boys would rip their shirts in order to tear out those itchy labels. Zero tolerance, I’m telling you! Good luck with the ears – sounds like you’ve got terrific advice from our on-site experts, and pictures of Koda to prove there’s light at the end of this tunnel.
