This weekend Ivan was entered in the Rhode Island Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show & Obedience Trial in Warwick, RI (The Ocean State).
On Saturday there were 8 dogs entered in Open A Obedience, 4 dogs qualified. Ivan got 3rd place with a score of 183 for his 2nd Open Obedience Leg.

It was a very small ring for a dog as large as Ivan.
The points he lost were:
Heeling – 5 points off.
Drop on Recall – 1.5 points off.
Retrieve on the Flat – 4.5 points off.
High jump/Retrieve – 4 points off.
Broad Jump – 2 points off…………Well, this was a good one and crowd pleaser….!! Ivan jumped the broad jump, turned towards me, saw the high jump (as I said, it was a small ring so things were close together) and he jumped the high jump, came around and did a perfect sit in front of me and perfect finish!
The 3 minute out of sight sit and 5 minute out of sight down were fine.
After the trial, since it was such a beautiful day, we went to Goddard Memorial State Park. We had a great walk, the park is right on the ocean and the dogs had a good time.
We spent the night at Motel 6.
Today there were 7 dogs entered in Open A Obedience, 5 dogs qualified. Ivan qualified with 4th place and a score of 176.5+ (after a run off). This venue is very claustrophobic and noisy and the second day of trialing obviously had an effect on Ivan’s performance. However we are very pleased that Ivan earned his COMPANION DOG EXCELLENT (CDX) Title in three consecutive trials.
It was in the same ring as Saturday.
The points he lost were:
Heeling – 8.5 points off.
Drop on Recall – 2 points off.
Retrieve on the Flat – 7 points off.
High jump/Retrieve – 3 points off.
Broad Jump – 3 points off
The 3 minute out of sight sit and 5 minute out of sight down were fine again.
After celebrating with some friends from training school we made a quick stop at the Warwick City Park before heading home.

Congrats. Ivan is such a good boy and yes that was a very noisy trial though I have to admit I always liked noisy trials it helped keep my boy Blitz from squeaking while he waited between exercises would give him something to look at . and I think I know the woman who was doing Utility in the ring next to you!
It was more noisy than normal I think. In the past at this venue the obedience trials were in a separate area which was much nicer. There were much fewer entries this year so the conformation and obedience rings were all in one area (I don’t know if you have been there but it is an ice rink). The rings were small and close together.
Funny that you knew the person in the UD ring!
Obedience entries could be down because I know a couple of those judges draw smaller entries….
Congratulations TEAM IVAN!!! I am very proud of you. By the way, I think you should have earned extra points for Ivan throwing in an extra jump. 🙂
You have accomplished so much with this youngster. Thank you for being such great dog parents!
I love all your pictures but you know that my favorite is the no feet on the beach. Excellent job!!
With that extra jump I was just so pleased to learn that was not an NQ. I’ve never seen that happen before!
The jumps were so close together and since Ivan loves agility it was natural for him to think that was the next thing to do. Silly boy!
Who is the judge in the video? I also saw my “cheese-in-the-hair” judge at the sidelines. I started chuckling when Ivan did the finish and had to give some extra eye-contact to Jack, and then I had to laugh the second time. Then the next finish when he really decided to do some looking around and never did finish. I was really laughing. I loved how you did not get flustered —at least you didn’t show it—and you didn’t get upset with him. The broad jump made me laugh so hard I started coughing.
What was the 1.5 points off for on the drop on recall?
Ivan is a beautiful boy and that gaiting picture explains why he has done so well in the show ring.
Congratulations Lynda and Jack! Big hug and kiss to the big goof Ivan and to Dylan too just for being so darn cute.
The judge on Saturday was David Maurer and on Sunday it was his wife, Celeste Meade-Maurer.
I think Ivan’s drop on recall looked great so I assume he lost the 1.5 points for that very crooked sit after Ivan checks Jack out doing the video taping as he does the “finish”!
Yep…After this weekend it is obvious I have to work on finishes!
Thanks for your comments. Ivan is a great dog!
Oh yeah I forgot about that looky-lou finish, where he starts to wrap around you and goes hey there’s Dad, then kinda looses his focus. After they turn two years we expect them to kind of being settled into themselves, but I think the boys, in particular, are still going through some mental ups and downs and overall mental growing up.
The drop on recall I thought was perfect on Saturday and Sunday he just took a couple of extra steps.
woo hoo! huge congrats to Lynda and Ivan!
I had to chuckle over the broad jump too. silly boy. he made that front harder than it had to be!
Will you pursue a UD or is it back to agility now?
I will do a few more agility trails with Ivan (and Dylan now that he is feeling better) in May and June. In the summer Jack and I work weekends and it is also too hot to do agility, especially for a black dog like Dylan, so I won’t trial again with them until the fall.
Yes, I will definitely work towards a Utility Title.
I want to know too, what are the future plans?
Congratulations!! Thanks for the walk in the park pics too… I swear Ivan and Dylan always go to the best places for walks.
This just made my day. I can’t get enough of the Doggie Duo!
Congratulations, Lynda and Ivan! You are truly amazing.
Wow!!! Major props to you two!! Roman is not only big, but very long and it can be tough for them to maneuver in the small rings…great job…we hope to be there one day!!
You can do it Rita!
Way to go Ivan and Lynda!!!! Libby says go half bro! I live the head over head photo and Ivan looking at Dad on they way around the ring.
Congratulations Ivan. Someday I hope to be as accomplished as you. Singer.
