UNBELIEVABLE! Champion, the company that produces Orijen and Acana has sold out to a capital company (Bedford Capital) that acquires businesses! Along with their recent purchase of Champion was a maple syrup company and an architecture firm. Why can’t the good companies get their acts together???
Peter Muhlanfeld and his brother apparently could not get their act together after their father retired and turned over the company to them! http://www.bedfordcapital.ca/investment.html
Now the director of Champion is Tim Bowman, and he was the previous director of……wait for it…….ELMER’S GLUE! Guess where glue comes from??? Tim Bowman: Executive Profile & Biography – Businessweek.
Even though the sons are still active in the business, it is never a good sign when someone else takes over. They begin to look at the bottom dollar and start cuts somewhere!
I hope the integrity of the ingredients stay the same, but time will tell!
OH NO is right! I was already thinking something was up when I have heard of several dog owners complaining of dogs getting diarrhea after starting a new bag of Orijen.
Not unusual for a new dog food company start out great and go downhill.
And it is almost time to reorder (of course). Karen, please remind us: what is still available that has no ingredients from China?
Here’s a short list.
The Honest Kitchen (Dehydrated Food)
Mulligan Stew (Kibble)
SoJo’s Grain Free Beef Complete & Turkey Complete (Dehydrated Food) These are NEW! http://www.sojos.com/products/dog-food/sojos-beef-complete-dog-food
SoJo’s Grain Free: The base is dehydrated vegetables. You add your own meat to this. http://www.sojos.com/products/dog-food/sojos-grain-free-dog-food-mix
SoJo’s Original: The base is rolled oats, rye flakes, barley flakes. You add your own meat to this. http://www.sojos.com/products/dog-food/sojos-original-dog-food-mix
(SoJo’s is HUMAN GRADE. Some dogs do great on SoJo’s and some not, but it’s worth a try for sure!) 🙂
Fromm’s: it does contain Sodium Selenite but still better than other kibbles out there.
I’ll list more later but they ALL have their problems! :-/
Does that mean Fromm and Honest Kitchen are the only major family-owned and operated companies remaining?
I use Orijen kibble (Regional Red and 6 Fish) as low-value training treats for Batman. He loves it, but we might want to cut back after this.
Pretty much! 🙁
SoJo’s has their own Human Grade plant and ingredients too.
Wow, that’s pretty depressing, especially considering how far the conglomerates go in marketing their dog foods as “fresh from the kitchen.”
No biggie…Roman got the poops from Orijen, so we switched to raw. Kind of sad because I always liked the Orijen program. I liked the fact that all of their ingredients were locally sourced.
A lot of people had the same experience with Orijen.
New company owners & dogs getting diarrhea are both very good reasons to switch if you are using this food.
Carole,
I first read this quickly and it sounded like you said that the dogs AND the OWNER’S were getting diarrhea!!! Tee-Hee-HEEEE!!! The owners really do deserve to get diarrhea! 😉 LOL!
LOL! I agree with you, Karen. The new company owners deserve to get diarrhea.
