I hope she is able to get the dog. I am guessing his first handler is the person who wrote this book, which is a very good book by the way…
You have mentioned this book to me more then once. I am ordering it!

In delving deeper into the story, we found that this dog, Rex, is in fact the main character in the book Sergeant Rex. And, it appears that he is not necessarily dying, but he is simply getting older and is ready for retirement. I do hope the military finally allows Megan to adopt Rex… For both of their sakes! For more information on Rex and his adoption, check out this site: http://k9pride.com/2012/03/13/sergeant-rex-will-be-adopted-soon/
It’s a blog written by Mike Dowling, author of and 1st handler of Sergeant Rex. 🙂 Definitely worth reading!!
