Hello Everyone – it certainly has been a while since I’ve posted here but just wanted to check in with my handsome Mr. Pickett.
Now at 13 months Pickett is really coming into his own. He has the most sweet, loyal and gentle temperament and on occasion rather goofy and silly, especially around any type of moving water. He still has a love affair with the hose and we play with it everyday in the backyard. Each morning we go to one of the nice dog parks around us, and Pickett accompanies me to work at my studio in El Segundo. He likes to lay on the couch while I do my composing work – and he gets frequent walks from myself, the dog-walker who comes twice a week or one of the assistants who like to walk him as well. He is very well cared for and we usually squeeze in a nice 45 minute walk at the end of the day before bed (which is around 11-12 PM for me).
He just finished a two week board and train with this wonderful trainer out here in LA http://www.dinazaphiris.com/ . At my request she worked on his impulse control – reinforced his heel and introduced settle which he has taken to very well. Dina says that Pickett has a wonderful “come” command that should make other people jealous. Dina recently founded a non profit organization of cancer-sniffing K9’s and I hope she will consider Pickett as a candidate for her super pack. She concluded that Pickett has an incredibly strong work drive and a sweet temperament, I was very happy with her work and we are going to follow up with a few more lessons to work on my timing and commands.
You can tell Pickett has the most beautiful coat of amber and black. He can even appear pure orange if presented in the sun. He is a great boy and I am so lucky to have him!
Thanks for the update Michael! He is his mother’s son in looks, she is flame red. the work ethic comes from Grandmom Kira. I know someone else that is starting a non-profit dog cancer detection organization. I am going to pass on your trainers name to them.
He has beautiful coloring. You are giving him an excellent life with plenty of activity.
Pickett is G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S!
I love nosework for these dogs. It really brings out the best in them. And in the case of cancer-detection, they can save lives. Science has yet to develop a machine that is as accurate as a dog’s nose. Not even close.
The orange in his coat is spectacular contrasted with his black saddle and markings. I’ve noticed that amazing nose in my little 15 wk old W-Dutch (Kira & Gavin). We have to leave our older dog’s adult food out – he doesn’t eat much at one time, so it takes all day for him to finish his bowl. Although we try to hide it in various far areas in the house, when Dutch isn’t tethered to me, he often watches for when I’m not watching him, then darts off like a speed demon. He can make a beeline for the bowl no matter where we hide it! Poor Beau, we’ve had to place his food in a closed room and he now woofs at the door whenever he’s hungry.
Wow, Picket does have his mother’s coloring. He is a handsome guy.
Glad to hear things are going well.
Pickett is very handsome! The A-T mother lines are surely seen in this boy. Thank you for sharing.
