I felt so bad for Beverly being worried about taking her new pup out and about that Julie asked me to share these sites with you! I’ve been waiting for studies about vaccinations for 17 years and apparently so has Dr. MOS (bless his heart)!!!!!
It takes a little time to read the articles and watch the videos, but in the long run, you may literally be saving your dog or your puppy’s life!

Thank you, Karen! I would call you the inoculations guru, but it just doesn’t have the same ring to it as “Food Guru.”
Batman has gone finished his homeopathic lyssin and thuja rounds. He is doing great now.
HOLY HOMEOPATHICS’ BATMAN! 🙂 Good for you Jennie!
The Homeopathic Remedies that JK mentioned are used to counteract negative reactions to vaccinations. Thuja, Sulphur, and Lyssin (not to be confused with the supplement L-Lysine) are used in different combination’s for the different types of vaccinations that are given.
Thank you so much, Karen! Vaccinations are a double-edged sword, to say the least. We are still debating whether or not to give Dutch the Lyme vaccine. Beaumont contracted a severe case of Lyme when he was 5, in spite of using Advantage Flea & Tick monthly. Labs are vulnerable to Lyme Arthritis (which he had), and Lyme Nephritis, which is often fatal. After a 6-wk course of Doxycycline, however, he was totally asymptomatic, although his titre remains positive, of course. He’s 11, and has never had a recurrence. We were so relieved, because initially he could barely walk. Those tiny ticks would be almost impossible to find through Dutch’s coat.
The majority of the dogs seen by our vet test positive for Lyme disease and one-third of them
were sick. It’s the number-one disease we see. Although the number of new cases of Lyme disease in humans declined in Massachusetts last year, the news was not good for Berkshire County, where we live, which ranks fourth among the state’s 14 counties in terms of having the most reported cases.
My husband, an ultra-conservative retired physician, remains concerned about giving Dutch the Lyme vaccine. He said there is no guarantee that it will protect him, and there are risks. To me, it just seems like a crap shoot either way.
When Dutch looks up at me with his little adoring face, filled with trust, and know that this debate about all the vaccinations is far from over.
Hi Beverly,
Sorry this is SO long, but vaccination issues really deserve to be recognized before we inject our fur kids!
Consider the timing and space in-be-tween your pups vaccines and especially the number of vaccines given. Also consider having the homeopathic’s on hand before they receive a shot, to help with the effects.
Here is a thread of people like us who are trying to decide what to do. There are additional sites listed too. Dr. Becker even chimes in on this one. http://healthypets.mercola.com/groups/healthypets/forum/t/100349.aspx
The thing is, is that veterinarians are injecting our babies with two, three in one, five in one or even 7 bacteria/viruses during their visit! Their bodies are trying to create antibodies to fight of multiple diseases at the same time! Is it any wonder that their immune systems get compromised??? Possibly crippling his immune system for life? Pet owners have to start saying NO……not for my baby! You can demand 1 type of vaccination at a time, spaced out, so that you are giving their bodies at least a chance to form antibodies against 1 disease at a time instead of 5! The vets’ don’t want to give one at a time because it is too expensive for them to order single dose vaccines. But you have the right to choose what goes into your precious baby’s body and not be told by someone that you HAVE to! OR even scare you into it!
I understand what you are feeling about the Lyme issue. Here is a very interesting quote from the article below: “In experiments done at Pennsylvania’s Veterinary School, of the Beagle puppies purposely infected with Borrelia burgdorferi (the spirochete attributed to Lyme disease), those who displayed symptoms experienced four days of self limiting lameness and fever and signs went away with- out any treatment.
As found in the field situation, experimental adult Beagle dogs exhibited no sickness at all: they just became Lyme positive on the test. None of the experimental infections performed at Penn’s Veterinary school found any of the dogs or puppies to suffer flu-like, cardiac or neurological symptoms.
Exposure to Lyme disease in dogs might be common in the field but disease pathology from the natural exposure certainly is not. 95% of exposed dogs simply do not get sick. Dr. Littman found this to be true experimentally. In the northeast portion of the country where Lyme disease positives are highest, 70-90% of healthy dogs have Lyme positive tests. Asymptomatic cases are not treated. They should however have urine protein tests to determine kidney involvement. Dogs that also test positive for Anaplasmosis, another tick disease are more likely to be the ones with symptoms. (Littman MP VMD, Dipl ACVIM Penn School of Vet Med).”
What I can suggest is to listen to Dr. Becker’s video on the subject, the article from Dog’s Naturally Magazine, and the quote below from Wendy Volhard and Dr. Kerry Brown. But ultimately, the decision is yours about the Lyme Vaccine.

Ineffective, Toxic Parasite Preventives
I’m not a proponent of Lyme disease vaccines. These vaccines are bactrins, created to treat
non-viral infections. Their immunization duration is short, usually around a year.
Even worse, these vaccines are known to be significantly more reactive to the immune system.
Sending your pet’s immune system into hyper-drive can trigger a whole host of serious
secondary reactions, including autoimmune disease
In The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog, authors Wendy Volhard and Kerry Brown, DVM, write: “Immunologists are finding a direct correlation between the increase in autoimmune and chronic disease and the overuse of vaccines. The Lyme disease vaccine is thought to have been responsible for the collapse of some dogs’ immune systems and a recent study at Cornell University suggests that treating the disease is less risky than getting the vaccine.”
Investigate and read as much as you can before you decide.
Hope this encourages as well as helps! 🙂
Karen, thank you SO MUCH for your comprehensive review of our options. I will definitely look into spacing the vaccinations to reduce the risk of excessive simultaneous challenges to his immune system.
I also very much appreciate the information you provided, and your insights, about Lyme disease. As I said, my husband’s position is not to have it given to Dutch. You are absolutely right about the statistics for healthy dogs with positive Lyme titres. Beaumont was totally crippled by it, then completely recovered with no ill effects after the doxycycline treatment. It hurts to know that Dutch will most likely be exposed and be positive for Lyme, but the alternative could be worse if he’s vaccinated.
You are SO welcome! 🙂
I’ve been collecting articles for many years so if it’s MORE reading you want…..I’ve got it for ya! LOL!
Karen, I am thinking about the one shot at 12 months option – one vaccination for Parvo, Distemper and Adenovirus.
What is your opinion?
I was just thinking about one of my husband’s favorite Mantra’s, which closely parallels Julie’s training motto (NIFIL): NOTHING IS FREE IN MEDICINE. Basically, Scott is saying that any prescribed medication has potential risks. He believes we should take a more critical look at medications and vaccinations, rather than casually taking every suggestion.
Exactly
Whoops! Sorry, Julie, it’s NILIF (nothing in life is free), not nothing is free in life.
I knew what you meant!
I only allowed one vax per visit. We waited for as long as I could for the rabies. I think Odin was 24 weeks already when he was given it. I do the same thing for my son.
GOOD FOR YOU Josie!!!!!
Vaccinations for dogs AND humans needs to go under the microscope!
Our son is a doctor in Wisconsin and after listening to me for so many years, read up on it himself. He didn’t allow his boys to be vaccinated until they were 1 1/2 years old!
Geeeeesss……….sometimes your kids really do listen! 🙂
I’m going to bring my husband to help me deal with the vet. The vet might be more understanding and compliant if they are “Dr. Blonder’s” concerns, and desire to space the vaccinations. Dutch will be an indoor pet. He will only be outside with us, and always under supervision, like our Lab, so it’s unlikely he’ll be running after a rabid animal. We have 12 acres, wetlands, and a lake, so there are plenty of critters out there.
AWESOME!!!! A man AND a doctor!!!!
Are you in Maine or where? I can get you a list of holistic vets in your state in case you decide to change.
That’s right, and in that order!
We live in the central Berkshires of western Massachusetts.
Do you know of any one in this area?
If you are required by law or by a facility* to have certain vaccinations please titer your dog instead.
*facilities that require this or that vaccine before they will accept your dog are IMHO practicing veterinary medicine. I know have some friends that read the blog whose feathers I just ruffled with that statement. Plus others that will claim are discussions on this blog are a form of practicing Vet medicine. God bless America and rights to free speech.
My suggestion to them would be READ the studies before you RUFFLE!
It’s proof…not ideas AND it is from DVM’s. 😉
Oh wow..
In addition to one vax per visit and feeding my dog raw. I also only use organic fertilizers on my lawn, corn gluten meal, soybean meal and alfalfa meal because I KNOW my cat and dog eats grass, I don’t want to poison them. Fireants are killed using boiling water.
We all want what’s best for our family. I follow what I believe in.
Way to go Josie. I know of a person who has had three unrelated dogs develop perianal fistulas, and a more then normal occurrence of other health issues. They routinely use chemicals – fertilizers, herbicides on their lawn and have exterminators spray the outside of their house monthly. I suggested tehy might want to try more natural methods. but the green lush lawn is more important then the health of their animals. Ironically it is affecting them too, it just will not show up as quickly.
You’re right, Julie – the kennel where we have taken Beaumont a few times requires a copy of the vet records, and won’t take dogs that haven’t been vaccinated against Bordetella, etc. We may have to find more dog sitters.
Julie and Karen,
We trust that you both have done exhaustive research on the topic of vaccination
Do you have a schedule of vaccinations you could share with us?
If you’re not comfortable putting it on the blog,
please send it to my email address: bblonder@berkshire.rr.com
The closest vet on the list of holistic vets is 45 minutes away.
That’s not a problem for routine care, but if we need help fast,
the veterinary group we use is 5 minutes away.
We’d like to try to maintain a relationship with the nearby group,
if they are willing to follow a vaccination plan that we’re comfortable with.
Kudos and thanks to all of you for your phenomenal work in this area.
Me too: kbuck60@ymail.com
Yes, I can give you a schedule developed by Dr. Jean Dodds, Grandmother of EVERYTHING vaccination! 🙂 which I will share below.
I can also share with you the decision that I made for my dog’s, after having a past GSD with multiple problems from vaccines. But, it is just that…….my personal decision. I think each family needs to decide personally what their protocol will be after they have read all they can about the subject. My decision was to get 1 parvo, 1 distemper and 1 rabies, for their lifetime, and titer each year to make sure that the antibodies were still present, and if not, to re-evaluate the situation then. My dogs also received homeopathic’s before and after the inoculations to combat the effects.
Here is Dr. Dodds protocol:
9 to 10 weeks = Distember + Parvo (Modified Live Vaccine)e.g. Intervet Progard Puppy DPV
14 weeks = Same as above.
16 to 18 weeks IS OPTIONAL….remember…OPTIONAL! 🙂 but would be the same as above.
20 weeks or OLDER = Rabies
1 year old = Distemper + Parvo MLV as above
1 year and 1 month or longer = Rabies – killed 3 year product.
I’ve also waited in the past for the state to send me a card telling me that their rabies was due, and then I’d “conveniently forget” and wait until I got the second notice! 😉
Did you know that Vets give the same shot to a 3 pound Yorkie as they give to 250 pound Mastiff, and a 10 pound cat gets the same as a 400 pound tiger??? Pure CRAZINESS!!! The vet can write a letter to the state explaining that your dog has been titered. It might work and it might not but again, it will buy you more time!
You can also “google” Dr. Dodds if you wish to read more.
Hope this helps!
Forgot to mention that after I found out this information when she was 2 years old, my previous GSD NEVER got another vaccination but was titered every year. Her last set of titer numbers, right before she passed at almost 12 years old, were sky high! Even after almost 10 YEARS!!!
Thank you!
Hi Kelli,
Has your pup begun his puppy shots and this is the combo that you might be considering for a “booster type” inoculation after your pup is a year old?
For me, titers are the answer as to if I would ever give them another inoculation.
I’ve looked at several sites about the Adenovirus and here are a few things I found for you:
In Whole Dog Journal Dr. Dodds was asked about the Parvo/Adenovirus vaccine and her response was: “I wouldn’t prefer this combo, especially when there have been no clinical cases of infectious canine hepatitis in North America for at least 12 years. There is only one source available: The Schering-Plough Galaxy-D (the old Fromm-D vaccine), available from online veterinary supply stores” . But when she was told that they did not make it anymore her response was: “Darn it! I’d give a distemper/adenovirus Recombitek vaccine – provided that the distemper titer result really is low. This industry sure isn’t helpful for consumers needs – but, of course, sales volume is what determines what we can get.”
Here are a couple of articles by Cathrine O’Driscoll who talks about adenovirus:
http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/vaccine-damage-in-dogs-1/ see the 4th heading paragraph titled: Vaccines and Cancer
http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/vaccine-damage-in-dogs-2/ see the 6th paragraph under Genetic Damage
Also, Prof. Ron Schultz recommends using Merial’s 3-way combo; parvo, distemper and CAV2/hepatitis if you choose to give it.
I know it is a hard decision but I hope this helps! 🙂
XOXOXOXOXO
Thank you so much!!!!
You are very welcome!
