Oso arrived home safely today despite the poor condition of the roads – not really a blizzard but we had 4-5 inches of snow overnight. My husband and I are both excited to have another German shepherd.
We learned to love the breed through Sasha, our last dog. She would do the smartest and goofiest things. For example when we would travel in our Jeep she would keep her bottom on the back seat and rest the remainder of her body on the console. She was essentially up front with us. Part of her motivation was attention but she was really after peanuts. I would shell peanuts and give one for her and one for me. She had very good manners and waited her turn every time.
When she was a puppy she learned to ring a bell to go outside. As she got older she attempted to ring the bell from the outside when she wanted to come back in but could not do it through the glass. She loved being able to ring her bell and get outside when she wanted. As she got older and smarter Sasha “tested” her bell just to see if we would come running. I think I saw a smile on her face one time.
Unfortunately, Sasha had severe hip dysplasia from the time she was a puppy. Next, she blew out both of her knees chasing a squirrel in the back yard. She had a big heart but not the body to go with it. Her last day was August 29. 2011.
Sasha is the reason we looked for a breeder who raises both mentally and physically healthy dogs. (Thank you, Julie) Sasha is the reason we are committed to not feeding grains to our new puppy. We found out too late that grains are hard on joints. We want Oso to have a long healthy life.
Oso howled for the first 15 minutes of the trip and I finally turned on the radio and made dancing moves with his paws. He stopped howling and settled in for the ride. He shows a preference for Latin Music which made Dan happy but not Elton John which dissapointed me.
He absolutely loves the snow and followed Dan around while shoveling and bit at the snow until Dan threw some at him. He really liked that.
I attempted to upload photos without success. Any hints for me?
As you can see I finally figured it out, thanks anyway.
Best wishes for you & Oso!
Congratulations, Kelli! Oso is the cutest little puppy!
I loved your story about Sasha. I think you will see her goofy spirit in Oso, too.
Kelli & Dan, welcome to the family. Oso is surely the cutest & will make new memories for both of you.
Don’t worry about his music taste… just like any other man, he is trainable with some food & a TV remote… oops, I meant a clicker… (LOL)
I know men have diffderent clickers, but same principle. 🙂
Congratulations on your new puppy. Welcome to the AT Family.
Oso loved Dan from the first time he saw him. Today Oso was soaking up the hugs from momma Keili.
Congrats on Oso coming to his new family, and welcome to your new family! Like it or not, your stuck with us! LOL
You two could get me in trouble and it will be fun.
Hello Oso from your brother, Dutch, in MA! I’ve been having fun in the snow, too, but my new Mommy and Daddy seem to get cold after just an hour outside. I’m so glad we have warm fur coats.
It’s great to see that you have such a nice family. Looks like you’re getting lots of hugs and love! Please write to me whenever you’re not busy playing, exploring, eating, and sleeping. I love staying in touch with my family.
XOXOXO Dutch (Wyatt West)
Yes, let’s keep in touch now that we are related.
Kelli and Dan congratulations on your new family member! These puppies sure do look like little bears, don’t they? Oso’s name is perfect! WTRanger LOVES the snow, too!
My condolences on Oso’s lack of interest in Elton John. These puppies are very trainable though, so I’m sure that issue can be overcome. 🙂
Both of our families have been walking the same trail of grief and searching for a breeder to provide us with a very healthy future family member. We’re family members now. (along with a bunch of other loony-toons on here! ha ha ha!) Welcome to the family!
Just one big cartoon family, that I am glad to be a part of.
Which collar is Oso?
Welcome to the AT family and I’m sure Oso will bring you lots of joy. 🙂
Oso was the lime green collar boy and Dan likes the color so much that he has one on now.
Who has one on? Dan or Oso? LOL
Where did you get the collar? U-Rock was the lime green U-litter pup. He grew out of the original lime green collar & I have been searching for a bigger one. None of the pet stores around here carry bright lime green. I too like the color a lot.
Try a hunting store, they tend to carry oranges, lime and reds.
No collar for Dan but if he did wear one it would be lime green for sure.
We also looked all over for a lime green collar without success. Julie gave us this one. Next time I will try Cabellas.
