I was talking about Via’s mismatched teeth, double fangs and empty bloody spaces in her mouth to friend the other day. The friend said, “Have you taken any photos?”
I had not. So this morning I got out the “good” camera, attached a micro lens, collected the puppy and looked at said puppy sitting there looking back at me – with her mouth closed.
Okay, I can open her mouth to rub her rubs. She even puts up with my weirdness. BUT that job takes two hands.
I put away the good camera and got the point and shoot which is operational with one hand and laid down on the floor in front of the Moose Butt. To get Via to open her mouth I waved the scarf that she had removed from a stuffed animal in her face.
She grabbed it before the camera clicked.
I stuck out my hand and batted at her like a cat. She grabbed my hand before the camera clicked.
I removed my hand from her mouth and tried again.
She grabbed my sleeve before the camera clicked.
I pried my shirt out of her jaws, backed up a little bit and waved my hand over her head out of her reach. She opened her mouth little bit to try to recapture my hand.
I was too far away so I moved closer.
I could sort of see her teeth. She did not open her mouth enough to see her “double fangs.” Her adult cuspids (vampire fangs) are emerging on the top and slowly pushing her baby fangs out.
I reached out and cupped her chin. She rolled her side and opened her mouth to grab my hand and I got my photos. Yay!
I was very pleased with my self until the Kidlet, 8, who watched the process with out comment, asked why I didn’t just use the clicker and shape Via to open her mouth.
“It wouldn’t have taken as long,” she said. “And you wouldn’t have gotten her so crazy.”
Robin, you crack me up. However, the expert dog trainer in the family, aka Kidlet, does have a point! 😉
LT Ouisa has one double fang, the other fangs are bigger than the one it replaced. All incisors have been in for a couple weeks or more. She also has the two huge molars in the back.
Will mother nature take care of that double fang? it’s pretty firm in place. I did yank one fang that was flopping around – it’s like she didn’t even notice.
Last night I trimemd her nails. She just watched! Jane and I couldn’t beleive it. It’s always been a battle. The older she gets the less she seems to worry about anything.
One lase note and I’ll stop hijacking the thread. We have construction in our kitchen. LT Ouisa taught herself how to unzip the dust barrier and let herself into the kitchen to see if the workers are ready to play ball with her.
Sometimes mother nature lets the vet remove the doubles. But it is early yet.
Dave, I love it. LT is definitely an Allie girl. Allie is a thinker and she has a persistent determination that always marvels me, entertains me, and yeah, sometimes aggravates me. I use to think it was the way I raised her, 100% trained with operant-conditioning and lots of free shaping, etc. But as I study Allie;s puppies I know it is definitely genetic. These are the type of dogs I sometimes thing are smarter then some people. 🙂
Robin, this thread made me laugh! I’m glad you finally got the pictures after all that effort. I always wince when I see teething puppies, you know that has to hurt!
Robin, thank you so much for the laughs this morning! I love your writing and storytelling…and your sense of humor. Ms. Vee has big-beautiful teeth! Look at the size of her pre-molars! You know those teeth would be really good for protection work. 🙂
If you look at the teeth of a American showline GSD their pre-molors are just teeny-tiny nubs of almost non-existent teeth. Use it or loose it as the saying goes.
Julie – did you say pre-molars? There are more of those huge teeth on the way! Yikes!
LT Ouisa isn’t eating all of here kibble these days – but she won’t give up the venison.
Who else noticed -12 on the thermometer this morning?
pre-molars is the name of the teeth between the canine teeth and the molars, they are are permanent teeth. So no worries that they are precursors to more teeth.
I promised I brought warmer weather with me, it is coming!
