This past weekend we took Sabree and Kapone to Metro Cruise which is Classic cars that cruise 15 miles of road. We sat about 4 ft. from the road, and neither of the dogs were bothered by the people, the loud cars, the horns, burnouts, you name it, it was going on. A friend of ours came by with his car and for some reason Sabree sat up and barked and barked until the light turned and he drove on. I told him I think she voted for his car since it is the only one that she responded to. Both of them were showered with attention and affection that day from all ages. And had their picture taken with a couple of kids who came by. It was very good for both of them to experience.
We were sitting with friends and Al went across the street to get us something to eat, Sabree was looking but not at him, when I looked closer I thought she was trying to see a car in the third lane which was stopped, because she kept trying to look on one side and then the other to see this car. Well when the car moved on and she was still intently watching and getting concerned, I seen what she was watching, it was a little girl on the other side of the street (5 lanes of traffic) her parents had a tether on her, but she was moving closer and closer to the road. Sabree sat up and was getting very very concerned, my friends couldn’t believe that she was doing this, they had also thought she was watching the car. When the little girl moved away from the road she laid back down and settled down to quietly watch. A while later she did the same thing with another little kid. I have heard it said that German Shepard’s are suppose to be able to evaluate a situation and figure out to take action or to obey and do what they are told (maybe I’m not saying this right) I believe that had that little girl gotten into the road that Sabree would have taken action that day.
I wouldn’t be as surprised if it was someone we knew, but this was a complete stranger.
She never stops amazing me and I have never been prouder of her than I was that day. She earned a lot of respect from a lot of people that we were with that day.
We had people stopping in the road to look at the dogs and some that would stop and seek us out, to see the dogs. I was afraid it would cause an accident. We were asked about puppies and if we had any more, to how much would I take for Sabree and Kapone. ( Not an Option)
We left them home the next day and there were a few people driving by and asking where the dogs were?
Sorry this was so long, but I wanted to share this experience that we had with our 4 Legged Kids!
Hi, Karen–thank you so much for sharing that wonderful story with us. It’s a tribute to the breed, and her breeding, sure, but also to you and Al for being great dog parents. Way to go, all of you!
Hi Karen! My husband and I were there also! We did not sit on 28th but drove it. I was surprised at this was our first year, how much attention this show gets! I hope our Lily grows up to be as attentive as Sabree. I know she is very attached to my husband and I. I think it’s the way Julie breeds them….with lots of love and caring!
Do you live in G.R.? Yes the cruise keeps getting bigger and bigger every year. This yr the weather was great.
What were you cruising in, and did you cruise up by studio 28 at all?
We actually live in the Belmont, Rockford area. Sure would be great to get together sometime and let the dogs play. We have 69 Cougar. We were not cruising in it this year…still needs lots of work. Let me know about the possibility of getting together with the dogs.
Good girl, Sabree!
Thanks for the wonderful story – that was heartwarming and certainly not surprising! Did I miss somthing, did you get another pup?
Yes we did. We have a Maika and X-Box pup.
That’s fantastic – are you going to be working towards Schutzhund titles with Kapone? Matt and I talk of getting another pup from Julie one day, but not just yet. Post some pictures of Kapone – I can’t wait to see him.
Thank you for sharing this event with us Karen. I am also very proud of the two of them! They do have a natural instinct to watch out for children.
I do not know what to say about people that see a dog on the street and offer to buy them. Based on the number of times I am told times I am told stories of this nature, it apparently is a frequent occurrence.
