Super exciting day!! A few months ago, I put up a post about my chickens. This is my first venture into chickens and have 8 hens. Well, today, Cluck Norris laid the first egg. She was in and out of the nesting box all morning and finally laid a perfect little brown egg. A few hours later, it turned into a perfect fried egg sandwich. My girls are really spoiled and eat only the best produce and are guarded by the best watch dog, Roman. By the way, is it a federal offense to use a USPS container as a nesting box?
and a perfectly cooked egg at that! YUMMMMMM
Excellent!
Better change the name of that box—Cluck Norris Laying Service. 🙂
Looks like a pretty fancy “palais du poulet”!
I am so excited to read this! We are new to this, too–have a flock of 10 ducks who should start laying around Thanksgiving time.
It’s really exciting!!! This is my first venture into chickens. We have friends that have ducks and their eggs are yummy, too 🙂 I read a great article in Mother Earth News about the huge increase in vitamins, minerals etc…in free range eggs vs. factory raised eggs.
You can see the difference in the color of the yolks. Store bought pale yellow; fresh free-range bright orange.
The girls actually have a regular chicken coop, but we just moved back to our home in Michigan and I painted the coop this weekend. They’ll be back in their coop this week. For now, they’re living it up in my sun room. Spoiled girls.
I want to come and see your set up. Are you in the city?
Bloomfield. North west of Detroit. Come visit and I’ll make martinis!!
Seriously? Chickens in Bloomfield? How does that go over with the neighbors?
We have an acre and a half and a pretty private lot, so no one sees them. My neighbors that do know about them are all saving egg cartons! Michigan actually has a right to farm law.
“Michigan actually has a right to farm law.”
That is VERY cool! It’s funny you should mention this. Orange County (Orlando area) just shot down an urban farmer act, so no chickens. However, the city of Orlando does allow it. At least this was the scoop on the news.
My neighbors would LOVE it if I had chickens. Every coon, coyote, fox, bobcat, panther, bear, etc., would be licking their chops. And for some reason, I don’t think they would supply any egg cartons.
That is great news. Barb can keep the chickens at her place and bring you fresh eggs every week when she comes to train!!!!
