(714) 891-2022Note: The following vaccine protocol is offered for those dogs where minimal vaccinations are advisable or desirable. The schedule is one I recommend and should not be interpreted to mean that other protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be less satisfactory. It’s a matter of professional judgment and choice.
Age of Pups
Vaccine Type
9 – 10 weeks
14 – 16 weeks
20 weeks or older, if allowable by law
1 year
1 year
Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV (e.g. Merck Nobivac [Intervet Progard] Puppy DPV) Same as above
Rabies
Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV
Rabies, killed 3-year product (give 3-4 weeks apart from distemper/parvovirus booster)
Perform vaccine antibody titers for distemper and parvovirus every three years thereafter, or more often, if desired. Vaccinate for rabies virus according to the law, except where circumstances indicate that a written waiver needs to be obtained from the primary care veterinarian. In that case, a rabies antibody titer can also be performed to accompany the waiver request. See www rabieschallengefund.org
I call Dr. Dodds and Dr. Schultz the Grandmother and Grandfather of everything concerning vaccinations! They have truly dedicated their lives to researching this!
As a personal testimony to “Limited Vaccinations” (not suggesting….just sharing 😉 ) our dogs had 1 Parvo at 10 weeks old and 1 Distemper at 16 weeks old! They are now 6 and 4 years old and their titers are still showing immunity. My first GSD had her last Rabies shot at 3 years old and still had enough antibodies at 12 to cover 5 dogs!
Here are the test study results:
Minimum Duration of Immunity for Canine Vaccines:
Distemper- 7 years by challenge/15 years by serology
Parvovirus – 7 years by challenge/ 7 years by serology
Adenovirus – 7 years by challenge/ 9 years by serology
Canine rabies – 3 years by challenge/ 7 years by serology

Big “LIKE!” Karen, thank you for adding to this post!
You KNOW I like to stand on this “soap box” too besides the Food “soap box”! 😉
What do you have to say to the vets that say Dr. Dodds has went off the deep end and is a little bit nutty??
Seriously????? Does this guy not READ the studies? He thinks that she & Dr. Schultz makes stuff up????
It’s not just my vet. I’ve heard other people talk about how their vet says, ‘She used to be a great vet but now she is some wacko that lost all credibility with veterinarians.”.
Dr. Schultz from the University of Wisconsin, is considered a world expert on vaccines. Attending a vet conference with Mos I sat in on his lecture on vaccines. Everything he said would be in line with one Dr. Dodds says.
One of the most memorable lines from Dr. Schultz’s lecture is we give vaccines that he called “vaccines in search of disease.”
His personal dog an English Setter he gave the last vaccine at 1 year of age and checked titers every year after until the dog was 15 years old. The dog was still fully inoculated.
Here are statements from other vets who agree with Dr. Dodds and Dr. Schultz that Vaccinations are DANGEROUS when not used ON A LIMITED, CALCULATED BASIS.
I truly hope that people will take the time to read these articles and books to re-educate themselves with this data to compare to what has been drilled into our heads by vets for SO many years! Take notice, and “Just Say NO” as Julie has said. Get titers done and see the proof for yourself! Hope this helps someone. 😉
“Many blogs and pet advice websites are giving out very bad information, some of this vaccine propaganda IS COMING FROM VETERINARY SOURCES that are just promoting the canned sales pitch of drug companies. DON’T you or your animals FALL VICTIM TO THE ADVICE OT THOSE WHOM HAVE NOT PREFORMED DUE DILIGENCE IN THE NEEDED INVESTIGATION REQUIRED BEFORE PUSHING THE MOST DANGEROUS MEDICAL PRACTICE ACT DONE with the most frequency in every veterinary hospital across the United States”. – See more at: http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/AnimalWellness/DrJordan.aspx#sthash.79jVPzcj.dpuf
Dr. Patricia Jordan’s book: Mark of the Beast: Hidden in Plain Sight – This book is essential reading for pet owners, animal lovers and everyone seeking to know the truth about vaccine issues. The book title, Mark of the Beast, sums up the author’s views on the medical practice of vaccination. Dr Patricia Jordan is a highly qualified veterinary surgeon with more than 24 years experience. Her observations and conclusions are based upon scientific evidence as opposed to the propaganda and junk science disseminated by pharmaceutical companies in their ever increasing need to maximize profits. Dr Jordan cites research studies showing that annual vaccinations are totally unnecessary and especially in respect of rabies where over vaccination is causing genetic changes and violent behavior in animals including horses. Dr. Patricia Jordan says: vaccination is the induction into a cycle of disease and disease management that is in every way a violation of the AVMA 1969 Veterinary Oath, in every way including public health and animal welfare. – See more at: http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/AnimalWellness/DrJordan.aspx#sthash.79jVPzcj.dpuf

Dr. Charles E Loops DVM – “The first thing that must change with routine vaccinations is the myth that vaccines are not harmful. Dr. Dee Blanco, D.V.M – “You take healthy animals and often very quickly after you vaccinate, you can see simple things like itching of theskin or excessive licking of the paws, sometimes even with no eruptions and licking of the air. Dr. Pat Bradley, DVM – “In a general and frightening context, I see the overall health and longevity of animals deteriorating. The bodies of most animals have a tremendous capacity to detoxify poisons, but they do have a limit. I think we often exceed that limit and overwhelm the body’s immune system function with toxins from vaccines. – See more at: http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/AnimalWellness/PetVacc.aspx#sthash.Hw3Xs7e1.dpuf
Dr. Donna Kelleher, a Seattle-based veterinarian who uses acupuncture and chiropractic, says that improving an animal’s immune system will negate the need for most vaccines. Vaccines, she says, have been shown to cause auto-immune diseases. “I feel they may be responsible for arthritis, skin, liver and kidney problems as well.” – See more at: http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/AnimalWellness/PetVacc.aspx#sthash.Hw3Xs7e1.dpuf
Dr. Dennis Macy DVM – “We should not allow politics and tradition or greed to enter the decision (on frequency of vaccination). Changing vaccination schedules doesn’t have to mean less profit, but that you have more income from some clients and less from others. Veterinarians and the industry need to have guts to be honest with ourselves and assess the risk and not be trapped in tradition.” — Dr. Dennis Macy in “Are We Vaccinating Too Much?” – See more at: http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/AnimalWellness/PetVacc.aspx#sthash.Hw3Xs7e1.dpuf
Dr. Christina Chambreau, DVM – “Routine vaccinations are probably the worst thing that we do for our animals. Repeating vaccinations on a yearly basis undermines the whole energetic well-being of our animals. – See more at: http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/AnimalWellness/PetVacc.aspx#sthash.mAfe3jjK.dpuf
How timely, I have to take the girls for their annual exam and was just thinking about asking for titers rather than allowing them to get the DHPP.
GOOD FOR YOU! 🙂 🙂 🙂 also a “hug” icon, but I don’t have one! LOL
Stick to your guns and DON’T get talked into anything!
Did you know it says right on the box on vaccines that “It is to be given to only healthy animals?” Healthy means…..NOTHING…going on with the dog like during a surgery, having worms, or a hot spot or digestion problems or seizures or under the weather…..Anything! And yet some vets are injecting these sweet fur kids with mufti-viruses while their immune system is already being stressed! Talk about asking for trouble!!!! Oui!!!
Took Libby for her semi-annual. My vet was more than happy to comply. Her comment was that most people do not want to pay for the titers 🙁
So lets see-saving a few extra bucks on vaccine vs titer= potential chronic health problems and cancer down the road???? Not a tough decision at our house.
Queen Libby allowed herself to be adored by her fans at the vet clinic and submitted graciously to her blood donation. Everything is looking good and we were done.
On the way out she was pronounced “thin” by one of the clients and they hoped she got better. I guess because she has a waist she is starving 😉
Your girls are so young I do not think they even need a titer test yet.
But they still want to revaccinate.
Here is the AAHA Canine Vaccine Guidelines that veterinarians are encouraged to follow:
https://www.aahanet.org/PublicDocuments/CanineVaccineGuidelines.pdf
This guideline states the same time frames as the post above. They recommend that they be revaccinated a year after the initial vaccines, then every 3 years. Rabies is whatever your state requires. Many veterinarians still vaccinate every year. I would either tell them you want every 3 years, titer them, or go elsewhere (whatever your preference is). I think most vets don’t want to go to 3 year vaccines because then they won’t see the animals on a yearly basis.
Just say NO.
General question for anyone that wants to answer but what is the charge for your vet to give your dog a vaccine?
I was charged 18.50 for rabies and 17.50 for a DA2PP.
OVER-VACCINATION=CANCER
Yikes! Makes me feel like I was responsible for Wally passing away at the age of 3.5. 🙁
My vet follows this type of protocol and is fine with it.
Some veterinarian practices will load your youngsters up with vaccines because that is how they make their money! Multiple rounds of inoculations = multiple vet visits and cash in their pocket.
Same with early spay/neutering—get you now before you switch vets and the money goes to someone else.
My advice to anyone whose vet is pushing the extras is to find a new vet!
Dr. Dodd’s contact info has been updated.
Thanks Carole for updating Dr. Dodds info!
Just as another update…..Teeghan & Doogan just got their titers back and the ONE Parvo vaccination and the ONE Distemper Vaccination that they received when they were pups is still going strong! They are now 9 1/2 & 8 years old!
;+)
Excellent! 🙂
So what about Lepto? There is a prevalence of that in our area.
I understand what you are saying, but there are SO many downsides to that Vaccination! And the worse problem is that they do not cover ALL of the different serovars that there are!
It really boils down to reading everything you can and making a personal decision.
Here is some info:
The following points I share here are not to scare you, but to inform you of what some leading veterinarian’s/researcher’s feel about the Lepto Vaccine.
Dr. Karen Becker: “There is a vaccine for leptospirosis, but I do not recommend it. It is a relatively weak bacterial vaccine with marginal staying power and it cannot protect against all 20 or more leptospira serovars. The vaccine carries a significant risk of adverse reactions, especially in small dogs. Information is also emerging that the lepto vaccine can actually cause the disease in dogs, and can bring on kidney failure in older dogs.”
Dr Patricia Jordan is a vet who has done a great deal of research into the vaccine issue. She added these comments: “Kidney failure is a common sequel to vaccination. The basement membrane is susceptible to damage from a clogging that results as the immune complexes are drained via the lymphatics. The kidney is a big part of the lymphatic system. The body tries to clear the toxins in the vaccines and there is damage done in this clearing mechanism.” Doctor Jordan goes on to say in another article that if you want to see 4 or more years of skin issues and itching……go ahead and give your dog the Lepto! Most of the articles on the GSD blog have to do with skin issues and diarrhea!
“Lepto is a very adverse event associated vaccine and the damndest thing is that lepto vaccines simply do not work. Dr
Ron Schultz (the world’s foremost independent authority on canine vaccines) hates to see them in with anything else and, in puppies, advises that they are completely finished with the viral inoculations before getting a vaccine against Lepto, which he neither recommends nor advocates – even in Lepto endemic areas.
“I have seen older dogs go into kidney failure within two days of receiving a Lepto vaccine.”
Vaccines can also cause the disease you’re attempting to prevent. In the Canine Health Concern vaccine survey, 100% of dogs with leptospirosis contracted it just after being vaccinated against it. Leptospirosis, of course, attacks the kidneys – and the puppy had severe kidney damage. http://www.dogsadverserea…cines/vaccineDamage.html
“The American Animal Hospital Association considers leptospirosis vaccine a “non-core” vaccine for dogs. That is, they do not recommend pets receive it unless there is a good chance they will be exposed to leptospirosis. The main reason for this is that veterinarians see more vaccination reactions following the administration of vaccines containing leptospirosis than any other vaccines. These reactions range from the minor inconveniences of pain at injection site, facial swelling and hives to a fatal anaphylactic reaction. Which pet will experience them cannot be predicted.”

http://dr-jordan.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/LEPTOMANIA-by-Dr.-Patricia-Jordan.pdf “Since there are so many Leptospirosis serovars out there, and since the pathogenic strains vary, and since the vaccines cannot guarantee protection from infection, it would make better sense to not inject your dog with any Leptospira vaccines. The trade offs to avoiding adverse events from vaccination – not the least of which can be renal failure within 48 hours of injection, or four years of dermatitis and puritis – would be the human caretakers actually knowing their dog is sick with a pathogenic strain and having their dog presented immediately for treatment.27 To do this, animal guardians need to be aware of the symptoms of Leptospirosis in the dog.”

I might also mention, that there are Homeopathic Nosodes for Leptospirosis: “What is a Oral Nosode? (natural Oral Vaccine) A nosode could be described as an “oral vaccine” in the sense that its purpose is to “immunize” the body against a specific disease. It is prepared from the actual organism which is associated with the disease in question, and may derive from filtrates containing only the exotoxins of the bacteria, or from emulsions containing both bacteria and their toxins. These filtrates are then potentised a million times to produce the energy only of the disease and this energy stimulates the entire natural immune system to react against a specific disease, so this becomes an oral vaccine for humans as well as pets.”
Good luck with THIS one! LOL
