This product talks about three forms of Vitamin C. What is the difference?
DogZymes Cran-Tri-C (Ester C, Ascorbate and Ascorbic acid) in concentrated organic 90% cranberry powder base. A popular DOGZYMES product that combines all Three Vitamin C types: Ester, Sodium Ascorbate and Ascorbic Acid blended with Cranberry powder. No fillers or preservatives and extremely concentrated
Here is what the ingredients are:
Maltodextrin- the base of your product: Based on the Food and Drug Administration’s Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), maltodextrin is made from corn starch, rice starch, or potato starch. Because of this, it has been widely believed that if maltodextrin is made from wheat starch the maltodextrin must be labeled as “wheat maltodextrin.” Unfortunately, based on conversations and email exchanges I had recently with a consumer safety officer at FDA and a labeling and consumer staff member at USDA this is not the case. Trisha Thompson: http://www.
Calcium Absorbate: Calcium carbonate is readily combined with ascorbic acid to make calcium ascorbate. Commercially it is synthesized by bacterial fermentation of glucose followed by chemical oxidation with calcium.
Grapeseed Extract: Contains: Vitamin E, flavonoids, linoleic acid, and OPCs are highly concentrated in grape seeds.
Flavonoids, specifically oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs), are present in grape seed extract, and provide extraordinary amounts of antioxidant protection. OPCs help prevent and repair capillary damage, and contains up to 50 times more protection against oxidants than vitamin E and vitamin C. These OPCs are similar to the compound pycnogenol in pine bark, and are sometimes mistakenly listed as pycnogenol in lists of ingredients.
It helps increase the effectiveness of vitamin C by acting as a carrier and as a restorer of oxidized vitamin C by working with glutathione.
Look for products that are standardized to 40 – 80% proanthocyanidins (a form of antioxidents) or an OPC content of not less than 95%. These have many health benefits!
Orange Flavoring: can be made from pure orange oil or made from a combination of mixed and matched chemical flavorings.
I don’t know what percentage the Grape Seed extract is in your product, but since it’s not first on the list I’m thinking you are getting mostly corn and rice starch and a smidgen of C!
The Cranberry is the only REAL vitamin c in it! To be budget conscious the above looks like a good product since it is based in REAL Cranberry, so they will be getting some whole food vitamin c instead of just synthetic! I’ll explain below. It is true that dogs’ manufacture their own vitamin C, but do the manufacture enough for the toxins they are exposed to daily? I personally supplement my guys with about 1000mg per day since it is a proven anti-oxidant that can help to regulate the growth of yeast in the body and it is also crucial to help boost a dogs’ (AND your) immune system. Also, the benefit is essential anti-viral, anti-bacterial activity. Rule of thumb is to up the dosage every couple of days by about 250mg. When loose stool starts, back of to previous amount and watch stool again for correct dosage and keep it there. There may be times when a dog is sick and actually needs more. Also, a lot of people use it to combat HD.
Synthetic or synthesized Vitamin C’s such as Ascorbate Acid (which was the first compound to be synthesized from Vitamin C), Calcium Ascorbate (Calcium ascorbate is a calcium salt of ascorbic acid, vitamin C, which is chemically bound to calcium), or Magnesium Ascorbic (is ascorbic acid chemically bound to magnesium). Not that these are bad……they are just NOT the whole food form of Vitamin C so therefore missing the essentials! But, thanks to the FDA, are labeled as Vit C.! These are the types mainly sold in health food stores.
So here is the kicker………The Absorbate Acid here mainly comes from……CORN! And, most likely from GMO Corn! You never know what you are buying unless there is a statement that says so! UGH!
“Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) Rarely comes from natural sources, but rather synthesized from corn.“…about 99% of all C vitamin products on the market today are not natural vitamin C. Instead, they are synthetically made ascorbic acid – or variations such as calcium ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate or potassium ascorbate. Like many other vitamins sold today, this synthetic product has things missing from it. Despite marketing claims, these laboratory-produced powders like ascorbic acid are NOT natural C vitamin complexes – and far from it. They are chemically synthesized molecules manufactured in a test tube and are often made from genetically modified corn sugar.”Healthy Vitamins RX”. Citric Acid: Citric acid can be made from corn… but doesn’t have to be. The only way to know if you’re product contains citric acid derived from corn is to contact the manufacturer.

Are Ascorbic Acid and Vitamin C Identical? Despite popular belief, they are not structurally identical. Ascorbic acid does not grow on trees or plants. It cannot be grown on a farm. It is produced in a laboratory and is an artificial reduced form of the natural Vitamin C. One analogy to help you understand this is if you compare Vitamin C to an egg, ascorbic acid would be just the egg shell with nothing inside. The Food & Drug Administration has permitted ascorbic acid to be identified as Vitamin C. This is why beverages, foods, and supplements which are fortified with ascorbic acid can say they contain this vitamin. Technically they do contain it, since according to the FDA, they’re allowed to call it that.
When manufactured, Ascorbic Acid is missing 80% of what makes up food grade Vitamin C!
Organicconsumers.org:
“If supplements manufacturers were able to buy organic ascorbic acid, by definition it would come from non-GMO sources. But of the few companies that produce vitamin C, none has shown any interest in marketing an organic product. Nor are any new players likely. To make a non-GMO, corn-based vitamin C would require a massive investment, first to buy enough corn to create a saleable quantity of ascorbic acid, and then to buy the machinery and personnel needed for the 17-step process to separate the vitamin C from the rest of the corn. That means all supplements makers, including those that sell in the natural products channel, have to buy what’s out there, with no assurances about the corn or other crops that became the ascorbic acid. When contacting companies to enquire if vitamins or medicines are GM-free, don’t be fooled by assurances such as: “Our products do not contain any GM ingredients or GM materials”. Such a statement usually implies that potentially health-damaging GM derivatives or enzymes are present, or that GM has been used in some part of the production process. So always try to obtain a guarantee in writing, that a particular product contains no GM ingredients, derivatives or GM-derived enzymes; and that GM has not been used in any part of the production process.”
If you want the truest form of vitamin c it comes from a whole food, natural, form of Vitamin C made from berries! Such as this one: Synergy’s “Pure Radiance C” is a great.
Quote:
“Nearly all conventional Vitamin C supplements found in stores today are chemically synthesized and derived from genetically modified compounds – most of which originates from China. In contrast, Pure Radiance C® is exclusively made from organic and wild berries that are naturally rich in Vitamin C. A whole food product your body will easily absorb, it contains no GMOs, additives, or fillers, and of course, no synthetic ascorbic acid. Pure Radiance C is made exclusively with certified organic and wild ingredients and contains no additives, fillers, corn, gluten, or synthetic ascorbic acid. All ingredients The Synergy Company uses are grown and processed without genetically modified materials and are certified kosher. http://www.thesynergycompany.
Well….that’s the jest of it! Duped AGAIN by the FDA!!!!! We really don’t know WHAT we are eating!!!! :-0
Thank you for posting this, Karen!
Is this the Vit C that you give your kids?
