That is some great information. Yet another reason why I only feed raw, high quality, lean protein sources. Rotate in some fish (except raw salmon from the NW and salmonids), hard cooked eggs, etc. and you’ll have a very happy, healthy dog. You will also notice they will hardly drink any water at meal time!
So true it is amazing how drastically the water intake drops.

Karen Murray gave me a copy of “Dr. Becker’s REAL FOOD FOR HEALTHY DOGS AND CATS.” W-Dutch was only 10 weeks old, and I have been making him the recipes in this book for all his food and treats. He is in perfect condition, 4 with a gorgeous coat and, at 44 pounds today, has a strong, lean body.
The only problem is that he goes nuts when he smells me making the food, but it’s fun to have an enthusiastic audience! If you buy the meats on sale, it really isn’t that much more expensive than buying the pricey kibbles.
I sometimes substitute Honest Kitchen if I get behind on preparing his food, or plan to travel, since it’s so convenient. I wonder whether the fact that it’s dehydrated is a problem, even though we re-hydrate it with water. What do you think?
It’s funny you asked that question! I was just congratulating Kristen on doing the total transition to HK and told her that is has been my experience when using the HK, to add 1 1/2 times the amount of water that is suggested.
I’ve been suggesting to people to add water to dry kibble for many years for the same reason in the video. It’s GREAT to have a professional like Dr. B talk about it to really bring attention to it! I hope more people watch this video.

This video also bring other things to light, like dog food companies using feathers and feet to boost the protein content that you see on the label! Some time ago, I actually found the company that promotes the ground up, condensed feathers they sell to the dog food companies!
They do it…..because they can get away with it! THANK-YOU FDA!
Yes, the whole feathers and feet thing was terribly enlightening. How can they count protein that a dog can’t digest / use as ‘protein’ as a good thing in their labels. I confess I am new at this part of things — but I found this clip incredibly informative.

My husband is so pissed that the FDA doesn’t regulate companies supplying food for animal consumption. Sorry for the lack of propriety in this post, but it’s Friday evening, and we are all discussing these issues and have decided that they (the companies in question) will continue manipulate their labels within a hare’s breath of legality. Our canine citizens are not protected at this time. We have to do our own due diligence to protect them. Thank you for this and all other posts that enlighten us as we try to do our best for our cherished pets.
That’s right, Karen! You’re the rock star guru for nutrition, and your inspiration stems from the love we all share for our darlings. We can’t let them down; they are always there for us.
By the way, it’s actually a “hair’s breadth,” not a hare’s breath! Damn that martini, what was I thinking?
Hey Julie!
Here are a few reasons why the name is “The Honest Kitchen”!
**Honest Kitchen is the ONLY manufacturer in the USA to have written permission from the FDA to use the term “Human-Grade” on its product label!
*Human-Grade Ingredients and Production – from farm to bowl. All our ingredients are chosen directly from the human food chain – this is a requirement for entry into the human food facility where our products are made.
*Taste testing is a favorite occupation for many members of the team; humans and pups taste every batch that comes off our production line as part of our Quality Control program, as well as various raw ingredients that are set to be included in new recipes.
*The Honest Kitchen is a Non-GMO pet food; requires certification from each ingredient supplier to such.
In my opinion, this is the BEST food if you cannot feed raw!
Thank you, Julie.

Yummmm martini sounds good right now! Just fed all the dogs and put the puppies to bed.
Go Scott!
I always thought the name “Honest Kitchen” seemed a bit odd, but now I think I understand the meaning behind it.
