Today is opening day of deer hunting. Mos had about a dozen of his deer hunting buddies over and in place in their designated blinds before the crack of dawn. The season began at sunrise. Deer hunting makes me a little sad as it is the time I remember and think about Wade O Brinker DVM. He would stay at the house with us during hunting season, he was one of those house guests that you never wanted to leave. He lived to 96 years of age and was sharper then I have ever been. A humble, dignified, and very gracious man. We all throw around superlatives in our everyday speech, awesome, great, etc., but with Dr. Brinker they truly apply and seem inadequate. It was truly an honor to know this great man and I miss him.
The kitchen sink is filled with deer hearts, liver, and lungs. Haven’t seen my husband yet but it looks like a good opening day for him and his friends. I am cooking up the deer organs and then off to play with the v-litter pups. The 3 – 4 weeks they are cute-cuddley, and they make sweet noises, but after 4 weeks is when I really enjoy them.
It is good to remember dear friends. It is truly a gift to have special people come into our lives and have those memories when they are gone. Same hold true for fur friends as well.
Sorry, but I gotta ask, what do you do with the cooked organs?
Also, Any scraps would be appreciated.
why I make deer-organ soup! I cut up the organs and give as treats and pour the broth over kibble.
As much as I do not like hunting, I know it is needed. I have tried deer meat, but do not really have a taste for it. I do like hearing about the V- Litter though. I wish I was there to play with them. I know they are in good hands though. I soon too will get to play with one. 🙂
the only problem is I don’t take pictures when I am interacting with them…need someone to help for that.
Even for a photographer there should be times the camera is put away and you just enjoy! We will jus have to form a mental picture once in a while. Enjoy those puppies. I will just close my eyes and remember the fleeting moments of puppyhood.
Thank you Irene I agree!
Sometimes I find myself wishing I were part of a reality TV show ONLY because it would be nice to have someone capturing the special moments that I’m not able to capture.
Hmmm….. maybe what this world is missing is puppy reality show! I think I might be on to something here. EVERYONE would watch a show about cute little puppies! Right? 🙂
If I remember right, didn’t Mos name his Newf, Brinker, after Wade O Brinker, DVM?
Yes Mos has a Newfie named Brinker in honor Dr. Brinker.
Julie, it’s so nice to have such fond memories of a wonderful friend. It sounds like Dr. Brinker lived a very long and impactful life. What a pleasure to have had such an amazing friend in your life.
I am so grateful for hunters and butchers. I am a carnivore, but a woossy one and can barely stand to roast a chicken. If I lived 100 years ago, I would have died of starvation. I really like the thought of providing a raw diet for our next furry family member, so I may have to cowboy up and get over my squeamishness with dead stuff…
Hey last time I heard that expression “cowboy up” was from my friend Jack…and I listened to him and I did it. You can do it too. 🙂
The “quote” for the 2011 CPE Nationals was, “Cowboy up, cupcake!” We also have shirts with that saying on it.
What?! A Cowboy up, cupcake shirt?? Where do I get one of those?! I am Minnesotan, but just returned in 2009 from a 8 year hiatus in Dallas, TX.
Okay, Julie. I’m ready to ‘cowboy up’ and prepare some dead-thing-stew. Now all I need is a pup to feed it to…
I actually got the shirt in Minn. when I was there for Nationals in July! Someone gave it to me for my 4th place finish, so I am not sure where to get another one.
Check out Cafepress.com. That website has so many tshirts, mugs etc with all sorts of things written on them.
A memory is the one thing that can not be taken from us. The people with whom we cross paths during our lifetime are so important. Some pass through briefly, some stay with us longer, but regardless, I am a true believer that everyone comes into our lives for a reason. Thanks for sharing your memories Julie.
He sounds like a great guy, Julie. Enjoy your deer organs (this would be the vegetarian, retching).
