David Pengelly was a local lawyer who liked to climb mountains. In 2003, he died in a climbing accident on Reynolds Peak in Washington. There is now a race here named in his honor – the Pengelly Double Dip. It’s a half marathon with 2,700 feet of elevation gain over/around Mount Sentinel. Yes, you read that correctly. Two thousand seven hundred feet of elevation gain – combined with a freaking half marathon.
I have no intention of running that crazy course, but I was looking for an in-town hike today and since the sun was out I thought something with a view would be nice. I happened across a map of the Pengelly Ridge Trail and decided it would be fun to finally go to the summit of Mount Sentinel, especially since Nuke had been cooped up all week and needed a nice long adventure.
That’s not a camera trick – it really is that steep. Wow.
That’s a view back down the trail when we were about 1/3 the way up. And yes, those are snowflakes in his fur.
I think I’d like to have a monument with a pun in it when I die.
I tried to do some self-portraits with Nuke at the summit but he wasn’t very cooperative and I forgot my little remote trigger. I liked this one though.
We stopped at the top for lunch and lots of water. Nuke was absolutely tuckered out.
It was a tough hike for those of us who didn’t do much in the way of elevation gain hikes over the winter. Nuke is now zonked out in the living room and I desperately need a nap. 🙂
Absolutely gorgeous photos, Stacy. This young pup sure has taken some major hikes!
Wow! That must have been some hike, Stacy. I’m running 1/2 marathon in 2 weeks and Roman’s my running buddy and he is NEVER that tired when we finish! Maybe we need to pay you and Nuke a visit.
Rita, I was thinking of you when I read this…thinking it sounds like something Rita would run.
Stacy, I love seeing your photos. Nuke is such a hunk, I just want to hug that guy.
Stacy, one word: WOW
Love the blk/wht photo of Nuke-all are nice, but that one is outstanding.
