I’m wondering if there is a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement that you like and would recommend? I am currently giving my dog a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement from this company:
http://www.animalessentials.com/#products:67
However, I wondered if there was something you’ve used and had great results with. I feed raw at night so that’s when I give it to my dog, along with a few other things (probiotic/enzyme, fish oil, vitamin e, and a b-complex vitamin).
What are your thoughts?
Karen’s response:
Hi There!
They sound like a good company with good ethics by developing their products with human grade ingredients! They also have some good tincture products!
The thing I would suggest is rotating your dogs vitamins just as you rotate the various meats.
Different products have different compositions, so the dogs would be benefiting from various sources. The only things that I buy that is specifically “made for dogs” is Dr. Becker’s Pro Biotic b/c she came up with the formula herself and the item in #3 below. Everything else I use is human vitamins.
I use 3 different sources.
#1.
I grind/mix my own multi vitamins according to Dr. Becker’s formula that is in her book. Takes a little time to make it but very cost effective.
#2.
I use “Spectra” Multi Vitamins by Da Vinci (1 tablet 2 times per day). It’s large so I crush it between 2 spoons. You can buy it at:
http://www.covenanthealthproducts.com/DaVinci-Laboratories–Spectra-120t_p_2630.html
$24 for 120 tablets. This is what Tom & I take for a multi vitamin/mineral.
#3.
I also use a very specific “Micro Algae” called “Bio Preparation” F2+ for animals. The animal formula is processed differently than the human formula since a dogs digestion happens faster than ours and their intestines are shorter than ours. So the vitamins/minerals are more readily available to their system. This product is a natural source of multi-vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, purchased from:

$25 for 60 caps. 1 cap 2 times per day or for you 1 cap at a raw feedings. This product is a true marvel!
Teeghan had a pea size sebaceous cyst on her hip for about 2 years, which I had to squeeze regularly. During this period, I tried everything from homeopathic’s to rubbing sugar into it, which was definitely an old wives tale!!! I did not start using the f2+ for this cyst condition, but just for a different completely natural vitamin/detox/immune system support product derived from a specific Spirulina (not the regular kind you see at the health food stores)! After about two weeks I looked at the cyst to expel it, and it looked smaller. Two weeks later I looked for the cyst and could not find it at all! It had completely disappeared! I was amazed and asked Becker about it when I had an appointment and she confirmed the properties of this product! Amazing! The one thing you DON’T want to do while using this product is add any other vitamins or minerals. It would be too much.
So, that’s my crazy protocol with vitamins! I usually rotate every time I finish a bottle of one or the others just like I do my oils.
Karen 🙂
Thanks Karen for the wonderful information! I like the Animals Essentials products that I use. I also use the probiotic/enzyme product with good results. I’m going to rotate for a new multi vitamin/supplement product for a while since I haven’t done that yet with Schumi since I started raw. So if I use your product number 3, you said not to add anything else – should I not give the other supplements that I do daily with that (vitamin e, b-complex, fish oil, etc.)?
Heeeey Becky!
How is that beautiful Schumi boy?
This Bio-Superfood (f2+ animals) is just that! A complete source of virtually everything (see list below) plus a detox! This is not your typical Health Food Store supplement. They are very specific algaes combined together. You should NOT add anything else or you could get an overdose effect. I would use one bottle then go back to your regular supplements for 1 or 2 bottles, then the f2+ again, and repeat the cycle. Sorry this is so long! I condensed the following. I think it is important for people to know exactly what they are using.
PER THEIR SITE: Bio Superfood and Bio Preparation unlike many supplements on the market are not a conglomeration of separate, isolated vitamins and minerals, or extracted and concentrated ingredients bound together and compressed with fillers in a pill. They are actually whole foods containing just four micro-algae carefully grown, harvested, preserved and proportioned: Spirulina Pacifica, Spirulina Plantentis, Dunaliella and Heomatoccoccus Pluvialis for its high astaxanthin content.
Contains the following:
*High-quality complete protein that is more dense and more digestible than any animal-derived protein. (between 25% to 50% protein.)
*All known essentials and non essentials amino acids.
*All known vitamins: A, B Complex, C, D, E and K.
*All the known B vitamins including vitamin B12 (human active) which is almost never found in plants. Great for vegan and vegetarian.
*All known minerals and trace elements: calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, sodium, iridium, iron, etc.
*The “good fats that heal”, the essential fatty acids Omega-3, Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA), and non essential *Omega-6, Omega-9, and many more fatty acids.
*Over 4,000 enzymes critical for good health. Enzymes facilitate breakdown of foods and increase the reproduction of lacto-bacilli, the bacteria that digests our food.
*Mucopolysaccharides: these lipids and polysaccharides are clinically observed to provide immune system modulation and reduction of blood sugar level to normal
*Alpha and Beta-carotene with antioxidant power hundreds of time more protective than vitamin E and C.
*Dozens of other antioxidants in the form of mixed-carotenoids: licopene, lutein, quercitin, phycocyanin, and many more.
*Nucleic acids (RNA & DNA).
*Chlorophyll with extraordinary calcium spirulan.

Hope this helps! 🙂
Thanks so much Karen! I’m going to order this product and try it today. Schumi is doing well. 🙂 He’s almost three I can’t believe it! I’ll post some pics soon near his b-day. 🙂 Thanks again!
I am looking forward to seeing pictures of the big guy!

The following is a “rule of thumb” of human vitamin amounts converted to dog levels that might be helpful to you.
Dosage information for most human supplements is based on the needs of an average person of about 125 pounds.
Divide your dog’s weight by 125. For example: 40/125 = .32 Multiply the recommended dosage by this number: For example: 3 tablets, twice per day 3 X .32 = .96
Rounding the final number a bit, the dosage of this supplement for a 40 lb. dog would be 1 tablet, 2x per day
