The other day Lynda asked if I lived too far north to have gators. No, I don’t think so…
The one above is on the high end of the yearling range. The ones below are younger. There are 5 in that pile, although I can only count 4 heads. The young gators are very colorful with the light-colored bands. I am not a gator expert, but it seems that the bands get darker with age.
A new meaning to black & red. From the size of this gator, I’d say it is about 2 yrs. old—long and lanky.
This one I wouldn’t classify as a youngster. You know that expresssion, “let sleeping dogs lie?” I think it can be applied to this size gator too. Not the biggest I’ve seen out here, but big enough.
This is only a little sample of what I saw today. The waters in this area of Lake Woodruff are controlled and the water levels were very low. The large gators are out in the main part of the lake and river breeding. Some day I’d love to capture a bull fight, although, I’m not certain I’d want to shoot it from this position.
YIKES!!! Now I remember why I don’t live in Florida.
Thanks for all the pictures Carole. That last one looks like a BIG boy for sure!
Ivan would not like it if we had to keep him out of the water.
Lynda, there are big signs that say NO Dogs! Even if dogs were allowed, I would never bring one here—way too dangerous.
And how far from your house is this?????? Lynda, my sister lives in South Carolina and they had gators in the pond behind them.
I live on the edge of the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. The lakes and river are a few miles from my house, so I don’t get the gators (no ponds on property either). But I do get deer, turkeys, coyotes, bear in the area, and once in awhile VERY large cat prints.
We loved South Carolina. Beuatiful area. It was so nice and warm there. Glad we didn’t let the boys go swimming there!
Don’t feel bad about being back in the cold. I just talked to my sister and it is rainy and in the 40’s
Hi Karen,
Yikes…glad we missed that!
We were very lucky on our trip. We drove through a little rain in RI as we left but after that we had great weather the whole time we were away.
Yikes, and I the snakes here scare me and typically are not poisonous. Great photos as ususal. I wish I could get a night photo of the coy-dogs we have in the woods by our house. In the summertime they come into our yard.
These young alligators seem creepier then the adults….I think they have bigger “smiles” and that makes look more malevolent.
