The most “natural way” to get rid of diarrhea is to mix 50% canned pumpkin (not the one with the spices in it for pumpkin pie filling) and 50% boiled, boneless, skinless chicken breast or ground turkey breast. Instead of pumpkin you can also use sweet potato if you cook, peel, and mash. If the diarrhea is really bad, first avoid food for about 12 hours but provide plenty of water. Then for a 20 lb. to 40 lb. dog, give 1 cup every 6 hours or for a 40 lb. to 60 lb. dog give 1 1/2 cups every 6 hours etc. Use your judgment to decrease time length if dogs stool shows good consistency, especially if it is a pup. Also, it’s a good idea to keep “Slippery Elm Powder” on hand, purchased from the health food store. Give 1/2 teaspoon per 20 lbs., per meal. If she’s had diarrhea on and off you may want to SLOWLY switch her food. There are a few great “kibble” type foods for all life stages. But, RAW is still the BEST of course 😉 !!!
Canine Caviar has a Venison/pea dry food made without grains. Fromm’s has two non grains, “Surf & Turf” and “Beef Frittata”. “Embark” by The Honest Kitchen is another. It’s important for all dogs and cats to have their food rotated, so you could change brands and flavors each time you buy a new bag! Don’t forget to always pour water on top of the dry food before serving.

Thank you so much, Karen! I will try the pumpkin and chicken tonight. Eva’s been doing better. I wonder if it’s the flagel….or the rice and hamburger (or both). I had actually taken away BOTH chicken and pumpkin, trying to get her diet as limited as possible. I already have her on a good limited diet food, but it does contain rice. I didn’t know rice was a “no-no” until I listened to the post on “People Food”. I will look at the references you posted.
Also, is your vet in Michigan? My friend has been looking for a holistic vet for her cat.

This is so handy because we are going through this right now and have a vet visit scheduled for Wednesday. I think it got into some deer or rabbit poop and picked up a germ. Yesterday we took all his food away and tonight we’re starting the pumpkin/chicken diet in the meantime. Luckily he has a huge appetite for food and water and is otherwise completely normal.

Hi guys!
I’m so pleased this was helpful to you!
See if the meat and pumpkin and slippery elm might cure it before the vet gives you meds. Don’t forget, if you must give and antibiotics make sure you also give an acidolphus capsule with it. Remember, a healthy gut is a happy gut! 😉

I add more bone along with cottage cheese, pumpkin, slippery elm and plain live cultured yogurt to the diet for my raw feed dogs. Via had a the runs after worming. She got the mix along with her raw frozen chicken wings. Wings are not enough meat for a growing dog normally but it did the trick after she was wormed. They were served frozen to slow down the consumption and to help with the teething.
