Whooo HOOOO Dr. B! I LOVE my vet! Doesn’t she just make a whole lot of sense??? She has many many more video’s on Mercola. You can sign up for free and you get about 1 new video/script per week on different topics. You can also just go to the site and surf which video’s you might be interested in. Thank you Julie for putting this up!

EXCELLENT! Karen, this is your vet?! Great info—I just love the Kid Chow comment. Can’t get an easier explanation than that.

Yes, and she is awesome! We took the dogs to see her the other day and you have to go in with pen in hand ready to write! She shares SO much information and knowledge with you so FAST that your head is spinning when you leave! 🙂 We are so lucky to have her!
You could literally spend all day on Mercola’s site watching her video’s or reading the scripts below the video! If anyone is interested, her book is called “Real Food For Healthy Dogs And Cats” which she wrote with a friend of mine, Beth Taylor. Beth also has another book she wrote with Steve Brown called “See Spot Live Longer”. Both books are available at naturalpetproductions.com

Interesting podcast on “People Food”. I always thought there was no way kibble could be the healthiest choice, but since I’m not a dog nutritionist I rely on it, with home-made healthy treats for training. I had never heard not to give rice. Since Eva had THREE bouts with diarrhea this week (serious enough for me to lose 3 nights sleep) rice has been a staple for us lately. It was off to the vet this am. He thinks she got into something (no wonder – she loves to eat EVERYTHING)! Unfortunately, he thought she should take flagel (I hate that drug)! But we will do everything we can to get her healthy. She is the sweetest and most fun puppy I could ever imagine)! Any advice from the experts out there?

Hi Carla,
The most “natural way” to get rid of diarrhea is to mix 50% canned pumpkin (not the one with the spices in it for pumpkin pie filling) and 50% boiled, boneless, skinless chicken breast or ground turkey breast. Instead of pumpkin you can also use sweet potato if you cook, peel, and mash. If the diarrhea is really bad, first avoid food for about 12 hours but provide plenty of water. Then for a 20 lb. to 40 lb. dog, give 1 cup every 6 hours or for a 40 lb. to 60 lb. dog give 1 1/2 cups every 6 hours etc. Use your judgment to decrease time length if dogs stool shows good consistency, especially if it is a pup. Also, it’s a good idea to keep “Slippery Elm Powder” on hand, purchased from the health food store. Give 1/2 teaspoon per 20 lbs., per meal. If she’s had diarrhea on and off you may want to SLOWLY switch her food. There are a few great “kibble” type foods for all life stages. But, RAW is still the BEST of course ;-)!!!
Canine Caviar has a Venison/pea dry food made without grains. Fromm’s has two non grains, “Surf & Turf” and “Beef Frittata”. “Embark” by The Honest Kitchen is another. It’s important for all dogs and cats to have their food rotated, so you could change brands and flavors each time you buy a new bag! Don’t forget to always pour water on top of the dry food before serving.
