The Harwich Police received an unusual call for service the other day. A dog walker noticed that a rather large Snapping Turtle had managed to get itself stuck between a cement wall and an outflow pipe at the Herring Run. After trying to hook a leash around the turtle and pull it out without success the Police were called. Jack responded and after assessing the situation he called the Fire Department to request a piece of fire hose. By looping the fire hose under the Turtle and pulling up gently the critter popped free and was returned to the pond.
Large turtles scare me.. but good job on the rescue! 🙂
Monica, I didn’t think you were scared of anything!
That is the first time I have looked at a Snapper and thought how cute. I love that last picture with his little legs out stretched toward the water. Good work Jack and Lynda!
Only snapper turtles and Gustavos’ at night! 🙂 LOL!
Good job, Jack. Somehow I missed the fact that you were in law enforcement. So why is it that Lynda is wearing those giant gloves, yet YOU are the one handling the snapper? 😉
@Carole
Hi Carole,
Lynda had the gloves on because the plan was for her to move the turtle once it was free. However, using the gloves made it more difficult so I just grabbed it and moved it to the water.
Jack
I wasn’t aware you were in Law Enforcement either. Are you both in Law Enforcement?
I have to say, you were both a lot braver than me! I hate to see anything suffer, but Snapping Turtles aren’t my favorite creatures. We have Snappers in the lake at the back of our house and most years we are lucky if we end up with one cignet out of six or seven making it to adulthood because of the turtles. Its nature, I know, but its so sad to see them taken like that.
Hi Andrea,
Yes, we are both in LE. I work for the Brewster Police and Jack for the Harwich Police.
We rescue any animal in distress….including skunks!
Hope all is well with you.
It must be extremely gratifying to be able to rescue animals in distress. Just like you, I couldn’t see anything suffer. Give Ivan a big hug from me!
