Hi Ann,
Thank you for this posting! It just goes to show of what most people think are good foods b/c of their brand names! These commercial so called “High End Foods” are NOT “Clean Foods”. I hope everyone is being careful of what they are feeding their BEAUTIFUL family members for a long and healthy life!
Regards, Karen :~)
Hi Karen,
A question: if we are feeding raw meat, how do we guard against salmonella in chicken? All the advice for humans emphasizes keeping chicken separate from other foods, washing every surface and cooking utensil the raw meat touches, cooking it sufficiently, etc. What methods should we follow?
Ann
Ann — if you take the same precautions with the food for your dog/s that you take for your family’s food, it’s just not an issue. I wash my hands after handling meat of any kind, for either species, and in almost 9 yrs. of feeding raw to between 6-22 dogs (ours, puppies, and fosters with horrid histories included), we have never had an issue. One of my friends has severe auto-immune issues, and feeds raw to her Pembroke without problems. Scare tactics aside, unless you live in a bubble, risk of salmonella is everywhere — even in commercial kibble!
— Anne
I think we just saw it in commercial kibble–the warnings did seem to emphasize the danger to humans from touching it
Hi Ann,
We also have not had one problem in the 15 years that we have been feeding a raw diet to our GSD’s. While there is always some issue with many contamination’s to food products, I have found that most owners who make their own raw food diets are very conscientious, which is important when preparing any food for either human or animal. As with any method of food preparation, it is important to take the time to isolate the ingredients to a work area, make a decided amount and use containers to hold it in you frig that allow your feed time to be an easy measuring practice. Cleaning behind you preparation is important too. The conversation about salmonella becomes exacerbated when any one incident occurs in any part of the news. Restaurants’ and Cruise Line Companies have the same issue, and we hear about them often on the news. You will hear about salmonella and other contaminants occurring in commercial dog food because, I believe, the amount and demand to produce within a cost constrained corporate setting allows for more accidental lapses in preparation care. In most animal food manufacturing, vats, that the dog food is produced in, do NOT require human grade facilities, so the equipment is NOT cleaned on a regular basis. “Menu” (the company responsible for the 2007 recall) manufactures over 50 different dog food brands and over 40 different cat food brands. Menu’s name is not listed on the packages. The high priced Iams and Eukanuba (a Proctor & Gamble product) is manufactured by them, as is “Ole Roy”, one of the cheapest dog foods. Author Marion Nestle (“Pet Food Protocol”) after researching the horrific 2007 pet food recall said “brands were all lumped together in one recall, all made at exactly the same place, all with virtually identical ingredients, and all made by one manufacturer”, Menu. So, are you REALLY “getting what you pay for”??? Readers, please check to see WHO is making your dog’s food and if you can’t feed raw, choose a company like Honest Kitchen (www.thehonestkitchen.com) who actually has a human staff that TASTES each batch of food!!!! Below is a list (in my opinion) of “not to be trusted” foods and the companies that own them.
Best regards to all, Karen :~)
Eukanuba/Iams: Proctor & Gamble
Science Diet: Colgate-Palmolive
Purina Items: Nestles
Nature’s Recipe: Heinz
Nutro’s/Kal Kan: Mars
Thank you, Karen! Your list is not a surprise. Interesting to think about how any shelves at the store would be empty if we visualize all those products not being there.
