For those of you who know me, you know that for me to say it is hot here—it is oppressive. After 5:00—took Kayla for a quick walk—cats spread out everywhere. It is just too darn hot! Even Kayla was rather sluggish, until she spotted this deer. She was standing on the other side of the fence just watching us. I put Kayla up and grab my camera. By then, the doe had hopped the fence and was just strolling in the field wagging her tail. She reminded me so much of my mini-donkeys! She knew I was behind her but couldn’t have cared less. I followed her until she reached the edge of the woods—figured I’d give her some peace in the shade.

I was just looking at photos of this doe. Does she look like she is a little low and full to you? Do you think I’ll be seeing another fawn soon? If that is the case—the poor thing. No wonder she could care less about me. It is too darn hot here to be birthin’ babies.

Do they give birth more then once a year? Beautiufl use of light in the pictures, your best deer pictures yet!

Thank you! It was the first time I was able to capture one in decent daylight in the open. The gestation period for deer is 200-205 days, with the fawns being born late May/early June. So I guess there is still a chance that I might see another fawn.

I like the sunlight shining through her ears. Very nice work, Carole!

Thanks Margot! I’ve put in a request that she occasionally stop by during good sunlight. That is the least she could do, don’t you think? She wagged her tail and walked off—what do you think that means?

It probably means that she just hired you to be the official fawn photographer of her baby to be and also perhaps she pre- enrolled her baby in your super day care facilities . In the world of proper deer etiquette the tail wag is like a hand shake to formalize an agreement.

The last week of July? Jennifer, leave your sweaters at home! We have been in the mid to high 90s—too high for this area at this time of year. Remind me, and I’ll give you an update closer to your vacation.

High 90’s!!! Yuck. We always go in the middle of August so I was hoping I would be used to the heat. I just hope there is the occasional breeze….
