From Wikipedia:
Externsteine [ˈɛkstɐnʃtaɪnə] are a distinctive rock formation located in the Teutoburger Wald region of northwestern Germany, not far from the city of Detmold at Horn-Bad Meinberg. The formation consists of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills. The name probably means “stones of the Egge“……. Interest in the location was furthered by the Nazi Ahnenerbe division within the SS, who studied the stones for their value to Germanic folklore and history……Some Neo-Pagans continue to believe that the Irminsul was located at the Externsteine.
This is a carving at the entrance of Externsteine:
Kira decided to rest on top of the dragon, her idea not mine:
Some of the groups that were singing, chanting, smoking wacky-things in front of the rock formations, this picture was taken after defending Kira’s honor with my camera, The pix is slightly shaky but not from damage, from me high-tailing it out of there and grabbing a shot in low light while moving….ok maybe just a little bit of nerves too (see my post on this earlier):
The famous rock formations:
Just outside of Externsteine, the house across the street from Karin’s house – where I stayed while in Detmold.
A close up view on the gingerbread-like decorations on the home:
These photos of the rock formations are awesome! I am so glad your camera survived so we all got to see them. It looks like there is a little bridge connecting two of the rocks – are people allowed to go up there? I love the one of Kira on the dragon (although I must confess on first glance I thought it was a poorly carved crocodile) a dragon makes more sense.
I am always learning about nature or travel on this blog thanks to such wonderful photos shared by all (not to mention all the great dog photos).
