Can you believe it?!! One week already??
Terror Report:
Now that I am stuffing the Kong with kibble and a little canned food and then freezing, the meals last almost 1.5 hours. The terror is getting better with Kayla, but I’m not certain if she will ever be trustworthy. After meals and Kayla’s potty break, I move the terror back into her normal crate in the kitchen area. Leaving Tina in the same room as Kayla for the entire day would require them to both be crated, which isn’t why I have Kayla. When we need to go for potty breaks, we are now able to walk past Tina’s crate without incident. Kayla ignores Tina, and if necessary, I give Tina a verbal warning.
Kayla Report:
What is there not to love about this dog?!!!
I do need to buy a bottle of smart pills for myself just to keep up with her. I am very aware of some of her antics when she wants something. I’m careful not to give, until I get something from her first. God, this dog would be ruling this house in no time if left unchecked! Yes, I will admit that her “cuteness” has allowed her to get away with more than it normally would. Let’s face it, I don’t sweat the little stuff.
She went from being afraid of the outside dogs to a couple of days later actually liking them. Today, during her swim session, she was actually playing with them! (between the fences) I robbed us all of some great shots of her today in the pool and playing with the dogs. She loves to dunk her head under water, but today she also figured out how to just plop down in that pool. Just too funny…she makes me laugh so hard it hurts.
Sally, the cat, is starting to get sick of Kayla’s kisses. Sally is smart enough to hold her ground, and Kayla is being very nice to her. Of course saying hello to Sally has taught Kayla to put her feet on the kitchen island. Oh well. The other two cats won’t have anything to do with her yet. The other day we caught Silvi resting on a cat perch near the door and Kayla managed to say hello, but Silvi wasn’t thrilled about the greeting. Silvi & Tiki are still pretty much living on the other side of the house. In order for them to get used to seeing Kayla, she spends from 8-9 watching tv with Rhona and the cats while Kayla is crated.
The baby gate: what?? not supposed to jump baby gates from a standstill, who says???
To eliminate the Tina thing, and the chasing running cats thing, there are baby gates in place around the house. The baby gate where we spend our day is just a joke to her. I have always been a big believer in umbilical cording, which we do, but I also feel that it’s important for her to learn to be loose in the room. So…the lesson that she learned today was…don’t mess with a dog show person! Now our room not only has the baby gate, but a 3-panel x-pen in front! HA! Outsmarted her at last!
Rhona mentioned something about this house becoming rather difficult to move around. I told her if she is having difficulty, to just ask Kayla!
Carole – How did you get so lucky to get Kayla? She has always been my favorite puppy since the “study time” and “take that” photos. You must keep us updated on her progress…also, where do I buy the smart pills?
I too have a Hoss child so I am not surprised what a handful she is. I had to laugh when you described her jumping from a standstill- mine does the same thing – only not over his gate (thank God) he likes to jump over me!
Kimberly, Julie would probably tell you that I have Kayla because I am the Master Schmoozer! Believe me, I feel very fortunate and blessed to have this dog! I too have loved her since the photo shoot for “Study Time”.
I finally got to meet her at the Bluegrass show in KY. What a character! She is full of self confidence, has beautiful type, and a flawless temperament. All I can say is, way to go Hoss & Kira!
Post some pix of your Hoss child. As for the smart pills…as soon as I find “the one” that keeps me ahead of Kayla, I’ll put them on the market!
Hi Carole- I will have some new pix soon.
I am a newbie to this blogging, so I rely on the kindness of Julie to post them for me. However, if you want to see him, he is Chief, under the Hoss x Zucca litter. We named him Chief because my husband is Native American, however, as he is the “large and in charge” type, the name was more fitting than I could have imagined.
What is a 3 panel x pen? Sounds like it does the trick. Maybe you could post a photo of it? We have experimented with so many gates it makes my head spin. He is 15 months now, so much more settled down – but in the beginning – OMG! His first day, he scaled his puppy gate like a little police dog – it was so shocking and funny at the same time – he took his front arms and hoisted him fat little puppy body up and over and just kind of flung himself over.
I knew I was in trouble. We tried gate/plexi glass combos, gates with actual fence wire-tied to his side (because he chewed through them), then he quickly learned from our other dog to simply lift the gate from the bottom with his nose and pop the hooks. We finally devised a sort of homemade drop pin thing (like on a crate)and this worked. I thought I would go broke buying gates.
Then when he was about 6 months old, he figured out how to turn door knobs and open doors – so we always have to keep his door locked. See why I need those smart pills…
take care, Kimberly
Kimberly, Chief is a masculine version of Zucca! Very handsome.
The 3-panel x-pen is just part of a portable containment system used at dog shows. Each panel is 2×4′. It is just a temporary solution until Kayla figures out the correct side of the baby-gate. Once I have the cat & Terror thing under control, I won’t need the gates.
For Chief, I would suggest a more secure solution. (The 3-panels are free-standing.)

It’s a High-Guard tubular steel gate that is 41″ high. It is on sale for $52.49
I understand about the posting of photos. Julie does all my photos since I am on slow dial-up. One of her many good qualities…always will to lend a hand.
One final note…
If Julie didn’t raise such smart dogs, we wouldn’t need those pills!
