Ivan….CDX!

This weekend Ivan was entered in the Rhode Island Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show & Obedience Trial in Warwick, RI (The Ocean State).

On Saturday there were 8 dogs entered in Open A Obedience, 4 dogs qualified. Ivan got 3rd place with a score of 183 for his 2nd Open Obedience Leg.

It was a very small ring for a dog as large as Ivan.

The points he lost were:

Heeling – 5 points off.

Drop on Recall – 1.5 points off.

Retrieve on the Flat – 4.5 points off.

High jump/Retrieve – 4 points off.

Broad Jump – 2 points off…………Well, this was a good one and crowd pleaser….!! Ivan jumped the broad jump, turned towards me, saw the high jump (as I said, it was a small ring so things were close together) and he jumped the high jump, came around and did a perfect sit in front of me and perfect finish!

The 3 minute out of sight sit and 5 minute out of sight down were fine.

After the trial, since it was such a  beautiful day, we went to Goddard Memorial State Park. We had a great walk, the park is right on the ocean and the dogs had a good time.

We spent the night at Motel 6.

Today there were 7 dogs entered in Open A Obedience, 5 dogs qualified. Ivan qualified with 4th place and a score of 176.5+ (after a run off). This venue is very claustrophobic and noisy and the second day of trialing obviously had an effect on Ivan’s performance. However we are very pleased that Ivan earned his COMPANION DOG EXCELLENT (CDX) Title in three consecutive trials.

It was in the same ring as Saturday.

The points he lost were:

Heeling – 8.5 points off.

Drop on Recall – 2 points off.

Retrieve on the Flat – 7 points off.

High jump/Retrieve – 3 points off.

Broad Jump – 3 points off

The 3 minute out of sight sit and 5 minute out of sight down were fine again.

After celebrating with some friends from training school we made a quick stop at the Warwick City Park before heading home.

It’s not all work…

Yesterday Ivan was in the Obedience Trial. Today he had a day of fun and play! We had a lovely walk in Hawk’s Nest State Forest in Harwich with my Mum and her dogs,  Danny, Daisy ….and Dylan, of course!

Ivan’s first CDX Leg

Today Ivan was entered in The New England Dog Training Club Obedience Trial in Taunton, MA.  This was his first time in Open A. He qualified with a score of 191 and came in 5th out of 18 dogs. He just missed 4th place by half a point. Ivan’s heeling was not as “up” as it is in training and he lost 5 1/2 points. He lost a few other 1/2 points here and there which may have been for crooked sits. Once again Ivan was a crowd favorite.

So proud of my boy!

Ivan in a Show & Go

I have been training towards entering Ivan in AKC Open Obedience in the hope of earning his CDX. Today we took Ivan to a “Show & Go” to access where he is in his training and to give him more ring experience in Open. In a Show & Go you can bring treats and toys into the ring. You can also do over any problem areas. In the video you will see that Ivan hesitates during the Retrieve on the Flat. He starts to go for the dumbbell but without any drive. I called him back and redid it. In a trial he would have received major points off or possibly not qualified. During the Retrieve over the jump twice when I threw the dumbbell it took a bad bounce and the mock judge had me re-throw it. Third time was a charm.  Ivan did the 3 minute sit and 5 minute down, both are out of sight and he had no problem.

Today after work…..

When we got out of work today, it was almost 70 degrees and low tide at the Brewster flats. Dylan is feeling much more like himself so we decided to take the boys to the flats. We all had a great time and the dogs are exhausted.
