This is a very helpful article. Pieka gets hot easily (as you can imagine, with her coat). Shane bought her a Ruff Wear Swamp Cooler for herding, we will be giving it a try this weekend at our lesson.

Good article, didn't know the trick with alcohol.

What I do with my dogs in the heat is basically give them way more options. I open up the house, the porch, and the yard. I put some fans on the floor. Add water bucks. Spray the grass down and spray whichever dogs want to be wet (Nikon!). Then they can choose whether they want to be lying on wet grass or in front of a fan or whatever. I don't like putting them in a crate wet and forcing them to be in front of a fan or on ice, I just open the crates and sometimes one (Coke) will choose to be in there. I also allow digging for the purposes of keeping cool. Phil was just commenting the other night on how funny it is to see Coke find the shade, dig his hole down to the cool damp dirt, and sit in it, that he just has this instinct that knows how to keep his furry, black body cool. During the day I close up my house and cover the windows and it actually keeps it pretty cool as long as the humidity is not too high.
