Herding Instinct
Posted by Liesje under Chopper
Chopper did her herding instinct test on Saturday at Make ‘n It EZ ranch in Hopkins, MI. She was the fifth GSD in a row to be tested. I let her watch the test before hers and she was pretty locked in on the sheep from our side of the gate. She went right in at them and the judge eventually tapped her with a little rake she was using as a stick. Then she knew not to run straight into them but took a little while to get enough confidence to run around them close enough to move them. She did it eventually though and the judge said she is very “fit” and “heady” which I understand means she focuses on the sheep and is not distracted and also can predict which way they will turn. If we did lessons we are supposed to work on her confidence in moving out ahead of me because she is wanting to “check in” with me and isn’t used to being out in front or way off to the side.
Here is a video, if it doesn’t work hopefully Julie can fix it

The video was fascinating to watch Lies. I’ve been wanting to try this with Jake. I’ve been told that there is a farm in Williamston that one can schedule time at. Where is Hopkins?
I love how Chopper checks in with you…it’s obvious that you are a great team.

Hopkins is south of GR, on the way to K-zoo. I took 131 down and the farm was just off the highway.
I think I have heard of the plcae in Williamston…is that Sharon Woolman?
The test we took was nice. She tailored it based on the dog. Some dogs were too drivey or lacked obedience. Since Chopper is good she was mostly off lead so we got to practice getting her to circle the sheep. Some of the other tests were her trying to keep the dog from eating sheep!

This litter that included Chopper and Blue has great sheep drive. I’d like to Filly on sheep. (Hint Hint Julie!)
Blue tried to floss her teeth on wooly butts a few times early on but settle in to being a nice working dog. However we haven’t herded in the more than a year we’ve been in MN.
Blue rather work sheep than eat.

Isn’t it that Blue would much rather go tracking or herding then eat?
Filly lives with Maddie and will be competing in obedience and tracking

I am not sure which is more important to Blue, sheep or tracking.
Both seem to give her great joy.
This is a wonderful litter, Julie.
Thank you for sharing Blue with me.
